Do-it-yourself branch chopper from a circular saw, drawings

Types of instruments

Wood chippers go by many names. This is a wood chipper, a shredder, and a Grizzly branch chopper. Regardless of the name of the operating mechanism, the equipment has one principle.

Composition of any wood chopping machine:

  • The steel body on which the working mechanisms and parts are located.
  • Electric, diesel or petrol engine.
  • Motor.
  • Cutting device.
  • Belting.
  • Casing.
  • 2 containers for transferring raw materials and unloading the finished product.

Do-it-yourself choppers may differ in their cutting mechanism. Also, cars come in different sizes.

To create a branch crusher with your own hands according to a drawing, home craftsmen use the following solutions:

  1. 20-30 circular saws, which have carbide teeth, are attached to the shaft.
  2. 2-6 longitudinal grooves are made on the shaft, depending on the engine power. They will have carbon steel knives on them. The branches will be chopped at a 90 degree angle to the blades.
  3. The crusher is mounted on a shaft where the knives are attached to the circle. The branches should be fed at an angle of 45 degrees relative to the discs.
  4. To increase the cutting force in the machine, a flywheel is mounted on the free edge of the shaft.

It is not recommended to choose a two-shaft type. It is difficult to manufacture and also requires a lot of costs. However, the productivity of such a unit is low.

Main stages of manufacturing

Even the simplest shredder cannot be made without welding and plumbing skills. The bearing housing and shaft will have to be ordered from a turner in the workshop.

The manufacturing process has several stages:

  • Choice of mechanism.
  • Calculation of the main gear and purchase of the engine.
  • Turning parts on a machine.
  • Frame assembly.
  • Fastening of transmission, drive and cutting mechanisms.
  • Installation of containers and casing.

It is better to choose a belt drive for the main drive. After all, during operation with a heavy load or an accident, the belt will come off without any problems, which is not what you should expect from a chain.

Recommendations for choosing a branch chopper mechanism:

  1. For crushing branches into chips with your own hands, a machine with circular saws is considered the best option.
  2. You can choose a design called a jointer if you want to get larger parts from thin branches.
  3. A device with a disk crusher can chop wood with a diameter of no more than 5 cm.

Engine selection

After selecting the type of machine, you need to start preparing the material and parts. It is important to choose the right power for the belt drive. It determines what diameter branches the unit will process.

Practical tips for choosing an engine:

  1. An electric motor with a power of 1.5 kW is suitable for grinding grass and thin twigs. For thicker branches, you should choose 2.5-3.5 kW.
  2. If you take a gasoline or diesel engine, the power can vary from 5 to 6 liters. With. Such equipment can be found in walk-behind tractors and small tractors.
  3. Experts do not recommend buying a super-powerful electric motor. It expends a large amount of energy with average productivity.

You should not pay attention to the number of revolutions in the engine; they do not play a big role. The required rotation speed of the cutting discs is achieved through a belt drive. For fast operation of the shredder, a speed of no more than 1.5 thousand rpm is needed.

DIY wood chipper

Garden wood shredders are called differently: wood chipper, wood chipper, wood chipper, wood chopper, homemade shredder, and so on. The general composition of the elements is the same:

  • frame on which the parts are attached;
  • engine – main drive;
  • the cutting unit itself;
  • Belting;
  • case for protection;
  • two compartments for feeding material and unloading waste.

The shredder helps to process unwanted branches

Choosing a motor for a wood chipper

To be able to crush branches of any thickness in a garden shredder, you need to pay attention to the drive power when selecting an engine:

  1. It doesn’t matter which engine – gasoline or diesel – the power is approximately 6 hp. For example, like a household walk-behind tractor or a mini-tractor.
  2. Ideally, the electric motor is 2-3.5 kW. Less kW is suitable for a grass and small knot shredder. More power will consume electricity and be used less often.
  3. The speed of the knife shaft should be no more than 1,500 revolutions, because It's all about the torque developed. Also, the distance between the pulleys and the length of the belt are not so important (although a long one will reduce efficiency).

Chopper knives

The diameter of the branches that can be disposed of in a homemade shredder depends solely on the cutting unit.

There are several types of blocks:

  1. Disc – a disc consisting of several knives. The operating principle is an electric planer. Shreds branches no more than 2 cm.
  2. Milling - to make such a design, you will need an expensive gear reducer, although the drawings are quite accessible for making a homemade unit. You can chop branches 7-8 cm long.
  3. Screw, as well as turbine-milling, are similar blocks. If the power is selected sufficiently, you will get a universal wood chipper for any branches. However, it is difficult to make such blocks, so they mainly prefer to create circular, twin-shaft structures, as well as shredders from circular saws.

Chopper knives come in different types

Wood chipper drawings

The easiest homemade shredder to assemble is a disk shredder. The main thing is to accurately manufacture the blade disc. If the power of the shredder being manufactured is more than 3 kW, then it is permissible to attach the disk to the shaft, since for lower powers transmission mechanisms are used.

Disc chopper diagram

The two-shaft apparatus is quite powerful, designed for a large amount of material of different volumes. It is more difficult to assemble than the first option:

  • center shafts with a large number of knives around the perimeter - 2 pcs.;
  • round shafts are placed vertically on the frame.

A circular disc shredder is quite easy to make. It is difficult to order a shaft for discs and the discs themselves.

The disks should not be threaded onto the shaft end-to-end, but through 8-10 mm washers. The disc teeth of the entire row of discs must be arranged diagonally or randomly.

Discs on the shaft

Preparation of material and frame

When manufacturing wood chippers, a lot of costs are required. If you find the material on the farm, you can save a lot on creating a shredder. The following types of metal may be suitable for making a frame:

  • Equal-flanged single corner, the width of which is 50-63 mm.
  • 2 welded corners in a 35 mm box.
  • Profile 4 by 4 cm.
  • Channel, the number of which can be from 6.5 to 10.
  • Round pipes with a diameter from 32 to 48 mm.

The electric motor is mounted on a steel sheet, the thickness of which is 10 mm, and the dimensions correspond to the distance between the holes on the edge.

There are 2 ways to tighten the belt:

  • The holes for mounting the engine are made oblong. They must be secured with bolts.
  • The slab is placed on hinges on one side and on studs on the other. This allows you to tighten the belt with the weight of the engine.

For a simple homemade wood chipper for heating, you will need 20-25 attachment washers with a diameter of 2 cm and circular saws with carbide tips. This will help create a work area 8cm wide. By removing or adding slabs, you can easily reduce or expand it.

It is prohibited to attach circular saws close to each other, because their teeth are thicker than the base. To compensate for the difference, washers are placed between the saws. The shaft is turned from a steel rod on a lathe. Before this, you need to select 2 bearings. The shaft will be machined to their size. In addition, it is necessary to make a housing for the bearings with mounting edges. You can often find them in a store or buy them secondhand.

Next, a thread is cut on the shaft for attaching the saws. Instead of a flywheel, a steel circle 1 cm thick is used. A pulley taken from agricultural machinery is also suitable. A steel base plate can act as a counter knife. It must be cut out of metal, the thickness of which is more than 1 cm.

To assemble a crushing machine with discs you will also need:

  • Circles of steel are from 15 to 20 cm thick. Their diameter should vary from 40 to 50 cm. It depends on the engine power.
  • Metal in sheets for a casing with a thickness of more than 5 mm.
  • Metal sheet no thicker than 2 mm for welding containers.
  • Bolts with nuts size 12−16.

For any type of shredder you need to make a base. The mechanisms and drive will eventually be attached to it. It is cooked from pipes and corners.

Special recommendations for creating a frame:

  1. The height is selected according to height. It is important that it is convenient to lay the raw materials.
  2. The width of the frame should not be less than 50 cm, otherwise the structure will not be stable.
  3. Cross members are welded between the posts to give rigidity to the base.
  4. For mobility of the shredder, wheels and a handle are attached to the frame.
  5. It is better to place the engine in the base area. However, it should not stick out.

Do-it-yourself assembly of the unit

Before proceeding to the last stage of creation, it is necessary to lubricate the bearing cages. To do this, remove the plastic caps in advance.

Next, assemble the shredder in this order:

  1. Between the saws, washers are placed on the shaft, which are tightened on all sides with nuts.
  2. The bearings are bolted to the shaft and then to the outer housing.
  3. The flywheel and pulley are placed on the shaft and secured firmly.
  4. Counter knives are installed close to the teeth.
  5. Fasten the engine and transmission by tensioning the belt.

It is recommended to install the counter knife using bolts. Welding should not be used; it will not allow you to adjust the gap between the teeth and the edge of the plate. The saw teeth must be aligned with the counter knife. Once all the parts are in place, it’s time to install the casing and containers for raw materials. Their sizes are any, they must be safe and easy to use. Finally, the machine is connected to the electrical network.

How to make an electric garden shredder for your own hands

The only drawback of the design may be inadequate safety, since the homemade shredder will not be equipped with a locking system for accidental activation and a special cover to cover the blades.

Advantages and disadvantages of these wood chipping units

The main advantage of this type of shredders is that they are suitable for processing any wood, including wood containing metals. When all shredder mechanisms are properly configured, it produces industrial chips , which we talked about here.

Therefore, wood crushed with its help can be used for any purpose, with the exception of making wood concrete, because it does not meet the requirements for wood concrete chips. You can read more about wood chips for wood concrete and the equipment for its production here (Chips for wood concrete).

How the tool works

All shredders (or shredders

) are designed for cutting branches, grass, leaves, vegetables, paper. To operate such a unit, you need a motor, knives, a base on which it all rests, some kind of area, a hole for feeding grass and branches, a container or just a hole where the raw materials for compost have already been crushed.

Shredders operate on electric or gasoline engines. The device is gasoline-powered, has a more powerful engine, can handle even branches 5 cm thick, works longer, is larger, can be moved around the site (this can be heavy), and does not rely on an electrical outlet. But it needs to be taken care of, it needs to be filled, and it creates noise and pollutes the air.

The electric motor is considered environmentally friendly, it does not pollute the air, it makes less noise, it is much lighter than gasoline, but somewhat less powerful. An electric chopper will not cut a 4 cm thick branch; it is doomed to work motionless near the exit and suffer from power surges. But summer residents usually prefer this. Its power is quite enough to work in a small area, unless it is a huge garden of several hectares.

In fact, the cutting part has different complexity. The simplest version. a knife with three blades, more complex. a chopper with a whole system of different knives and, possibly, powerful equipment in which a mechanism with screws or even a turbine is installed. Each owner can decide how powerful a tool he needs to cut branches, grass and leaves on a site.

When compared to other household appliances, some choppers act like a meat grinder. they draw and chop herbs and twigs, throw the resulting product into a dish or simply onto the floor, and cut others into containers such as coffee grinders.

In spring and autumn, a lot of debris from trees, as well as dried plants, appears on personal plots. Basically, gardeners use overgrown tops as fertilizers, and it is necessary that the remains of grass and branches rot. To speed up the decomposition process, it is necessary to chop up the remains; therefore, a branch chopper is used. This device will help you complete the task easily and safely.

Garden herb grinder

The homemade grass shredder you create depends on how much grass will need to be processed (disposal of garden waste, for compost, for livestock feed). Basically, it is not much different from a meat grinder, only for grass and hay and straw, in any case, the operating principle is the same.

Be sure to read: Rating of motor drills for earthworks

Types of herb grinders:

  • different in power, depending on how much grass needs to be processed. With great power they can even handle small knots;
  • different types of knives - disc knives (blades that crush garden waste when rotating), milling knives (gears that, when rotating, tighten the material and automatically grind it);
  • different types of operation - on gasoline (maintenance is more expensive) or electricity (the device is tied to an existing outlet);
  • stationary type or mobile (lawn mower type).

You can construct a grass chopper from seemingly unexpected units.

From the washing machine

In itself, it is an excellent volumetric container for hay, grass, straw, etc. The principle of this chopper is similar to a food processor.

Necessary:

  • several knives placed in a cylindrical container;
  • an additional container for the upper part of the unit, into which hay, grass, and straw will be supplied;
  • an additional hole in the side so that there is a place for recycled material to flow from;
  • receiver of finished products (bucket, box, etc.).

From a vacuum cleaner

All you need is the vacuum cleaner body and its motor.

You will need:

  • the engine power can be equal to 180 W, this is enough;
  • fasten knives from unnecessary hacksaws with nuts to a threaded sleeve (approximate length - 40 mm). Secure at the bottom of the container and bolt above the knives;
  • try to make a hole for chopped grass under the legs or in the side;
  • To protect the electric motor, the base must be stable.

From the Bulgarian

The principle of creating a homemade grass grinder from a grinder, as in previous units:

  • select a container;
  • drill a hole in the bottom to install the cutting unit;
  • make a metal base and attach an angle grinder to it, carefully securing it with clamps.

Main components of the chopper

The self-made branch crusher is based on the design and has the following components:

  • Electric motor to provide torque.
  • One or two working shafts.
  • Directly the working knives themselves.
  • The frame serves as the base.
  • A special bunker is installed to load branches.
  • The casing provides protection from possible injuries.

For convenience, the wood chipper is equipped with a pair or four wheels. During operation, the engine, through a system of chains or belts, transmits rotation to the shafts with working knives installed on them. Branches, leaves, and rotten wood are loaded into the receiving box, and the working mechanisms grind the waste into chips, which can later be loaded into a humus pit. The operation of the structure resembles the operation of a household meat grinder.

Industrial size shredders are designed for processing thick branches. In the conditions of a personal plot, this does not make sense, so it is worth making a country veterinarian with your own hands.

Types of engines

A homemade branch chopper has one basic design. The difference may be in the power of the electric motor. For more powerful devices, a gasoline engine is used; it can be used to chop trees with trunks with a diameter of more than 100 mm. Gasoline cars are distinguished by their mobility due to their independence and independence from power sources.

Electric drives for garden wood chippers are divided into three main types based on power:

  1. To process waste in small areas, an engine with an operating power of up to 1.5 kW is used; it is capable of grinding branches with a diameter of up to 2 cm.
  2. When chopping branches up to 4 cm, a drive with a power of up to 4 kW is used on a personal plot.
  3. A value of 6 kW or more is used when working on wood waste collection in large areas.

Basically, when making a branch chopper with your own hands, install an electric motor of no more than 4 kW. A power value higher than this may result in high energy consumption. The speed from the drive can be 1500 rpm; to adjust this indicator, you can change the diameter of the pulley.

Torque is transmitted using a chain or belt drive, or by installing shredder blades on the engine shaft itself.

Safety precautions when working with homemade garden crushers

No matter how easy it may seem to use garden shredders, working with them can lead to injury:

  1. Always make sure that there are no small children near it when using a homemade shredder.
  2. Never load metal, glass objects, or construction waste into the unit.
  3. Do not put your hands inside during operation.
  4. If something gets inside or the size of the branches exceeds the power of the device, you need to turn off the engine and remove the unnecessary using some tongs.
  5. Always wear gloves, a protective mask and safety glasses.
  6. If the garden shredder is powered, it should be located as far as possible from water sources to avoid short circuits.
  7. Do not store homemade shredders in places unprotected from moisture or at low or high temperatures.
  8. Before using the shredder, always check its serviceability, reliability of fastening of parts, and integrity of the wires.
  9. After using the shredder, clean the body and blades of any remaining garden debris. Damaged knives should be replaced immediately with new ones.

Homemade electric shredder

You can make your own chopper if you have the necessary elements. The most practical is considered to be a branch crusher consisting of two shafts. For manufacturing, a drawing is created according to which the assembly is carried out.

Initially, the necessary material and tools are selected:

  • electric motor with rated power up to 4 kW
  • a pair of steel plates up to 10 mm thick
  • two gears made of high-strength steel
  • a couple of pulleys
  • shafts, hardened and machined
  • bearings for reliable shaft mounting
  • direct cutting steel blades
  • metal case
  • steel pipe of the required diameter
  • set of wrenches
  • welding machine
  • powerful drill or hammer drill

From a square blank we grind shafts on both sides. In the center we drill holes for 4 knives, threads are cut into them. The rounded edges are inserted into bearings. The drum is made from 4 studs and two steel plates in which holes are cut for the bearings.

Bearings and pulleys are firmly secured to the shaft, and gears are installed on the opposite side. We install the housing with the cutting mechanism and the engine on the pre-prepared frame. The transmission of torque from the drive will be carried out using belts through pulleys on the motor shafts and knives.

The receiver body is made of sheet metal, cut in the shape of 4 trapezoids. Using a welding machine, they are fastened together in the form of a truncated pyramid. The box is connected to the cutting mechanism body using a bolted connection.

Attention! Must be tested without load before use.

Garden shredder from washing machine

To assemble a branch chopper with your own hands, you need to carry out the following manipulations:

  • The activator is removed from an old type washing machine.
  • A pre-made knife is installed directly on the motor shaft.
  • The size of the working tool is made slightly smaller than the diameter of the drum.
  • A hole is cut in the lower part of the body from which the wood chips will spill out.
  • The housing is attached to the hole.

This design allows you to process small debris, grass, or tops of small plants, with a relatively low power.

Homemade grinder grinder

Making a branch chopper with your own hands from a grinder is divided into several stages:

  • We take a 20 liter bottle, cut off the bottom part, and enlarge the hole in the top. This will be the receiver.
  • We pass the axis of the device from the side.
  • We install the cutting element on top of the shaft and securely fasten the entire structure.

Important! When rotating the knives, the blade should not touch the walls of the receiver body. To start chopping, the branches are loaded from above and the grinder is turned on at minimum speed.

Trimmer crusher

For a branch chopper made with your own hands from a garden trimmer, you need to prepare the following necessary elements:

  • container made of plastic or metal with a volume of up to 50 l
  • several metal pipes with a diameter of up to 20 mm
  • steel network with an area of about 1 sq.m. with a small mesh
  • scrap of wooden board or plywood
  • you need to purchase metal clamps for fastenings
  • wooden blocks and screws for fastening them
  • directly the trimmer itself of any design

As an auxiliary tool, it is recommended to prepare:

  • screwdriver
  • anvil
  • drill
  • jigsaw
  • plumber's hammer

In order to make a chopper, you must follow the step-by-step instructions:

  • Initially, prepare the container of the veterinary chopper. To do this, holes in the form of trapezoids are drilled and cut out at the bottom. The edges are processed.
  • The mesh is secured to the bottom using bars. This creates a membrane.
  • The container is placed at a low height using a pipe structure.
  • The trimmer motor is mounted on the board.
  • The rod of the device is shortened slightly and also installed on a base with a drive.
  • A cutting tool is placed at the end of the rod.
  • Before carrying out actual work, tests must be carried out. You can use different attachments to chop branches of different thicknesses.

Common options for the simplest do-it-yourself branch choppers

Although it may initially seem that making a garden wood chipper is very difficult, but in fact this procedure is not difficult for a person who knows how to handle power tools.

You need to start making a garden shredder by preparing a detailed drawing. The sketch indicates the dimensions of each part and assembly that will become the basis of the tool. Making a drawing will simplify the procedure for building a chopper with your own hands. The photo below shows examples of drawings developed independently, on the basis of which the working tools were designed. They can be used as a basis for the production of your own modifications of shredders.

Diagram of a disk chipper

As a rule, few of those who decide to make a garden shredder on their own tend to spend a lot of effort, time and money on it. That is why the material discusses the simplest types of garden shredders, the construction of which any master can handle. The most common options for shredders are:

  1. From Bulgarian.
Every craftsman has this indispensable tool on his farm, from which you can make not only a circular saw, but also a branch chopper. The advantage of this tool is its powerful electric motor. It will be interesting for everyone to know how to make a garden shredder for branches from a grinder.

  2. From an old washing machine
. If you plan to dispose of your washing machine, then we recommend holding off on this matter. After all, this device can be used to make a quite decent shredder of small branches and grass.

  3. From a circular saw
    - if the farm has this tool, then it can be used not only for sawing large logs, but also for chopping small branches, producing wood shavings and wood chips.

  4. From a drill
    — the capabilities of this universal tool can be expanded by making a garden crusher out of it. All you need to do is secure a two-blade knife in the chuck.

  5. From a gasoline engine from a walk-behind tractor
    - if the farm has a powerful electric motor, then it can be used to make a good shredder for crushing small and large branches.

Next, we will look at the instructions for making garden crushers for branches and grass with your own hands. Based on the options presented, you can choose the best one for yourself to implement at home.

Instructions for making a garden shredder from a grinder with your own hands

A large number of revolutions of a power tool such as an angle grinder can be used to chop small branches. To make a garden shredder from a grinder, you need to follow these steps:

  1. Take a steel plate 2-3 mm thick and 150x300 mm in size, and make a blank from it. To do this, you need to drill a hole with a diameter of 100 mm in the central part. To do this, you can use a drill, grinder and file.

  2. Drill 4 holes with a diameter of 4 mm around the perimeter. They are needed to secure the plate to the grinder.

  3. Using studs, nuts and washers, we attach the plate to the angle grinder.

  4. We fix the tool to the sheet with additional steel plates using a welding machine and bolt connectors.

  5. A rectangular hole is cut in the sheet, which is needed to feed the branches to the rotating disk.

  6. As the cutting part we use a 4-blade disk from a trimmer, attached to the tool spindle.

  7. The working part of the tool is ready, so all that remains is to make the body and test the unit. We use an old OP-35 fire extinguisher as the base for the body. Cut off part of the fire extinguisher and weld to it the mechanism obtained earlier from the grinder.

  8. The remaining projections are covered with steel plates.

  9. Weld a cylindrical base to the resulting hole, into which the material for grinding will be fed.

  10. At the final stage, weld the legs to the resulting tool and begin testing it. To avoid having to collect sawdust from the ground, place a bucket under the lower part of the tool.

The resulting grinder for branches can also be used for crushing various plant debris, such as flowers, grass, etc. As you can see, the procedure for making a crusher from an angle grinder yourself is not at all difficult and does not take much time.

Another version of a garden grinder made from a grinder is shown in the photo above. To make such a tool, you will need to put in even less effort. The disadvantage of structures made from angle grinders is the need to supply branches to the chopper in small quantities, so you have to spend a lot of time. However, this method of disposal is much more effective than chopping small sticks manually using an ax or pruning shears. Below is a selection of options for homemade shredders that can be used as a basis when designing your own tool.

How to make a garden shredder for branches from a washing machine

To make a branch chopper from a washing machine, you will need a tank that will act as a hopper. In the central part of the tank, drill a hole of the appropriate diameter for the electric motor shaft. The cutting element is attached to the shaft and securely fixed. Knives can be made from high-speed steel.

The electric motor used from the washing machine has very low power, so the resulting design should be used for grinding small branches and grass. It is important to consider that the hole in the tank through which the ground branches and grass will come out must be of small diameter. The larger its diameter, the smaller the size of the crushed fractions.

Garden shredder made from a circular saw - DIY technology

An effective and high-performance shredder can be made from a circular saw, but its manufacture should be approached more responsibly. To supplement a circular saw with a shredder, you will need to do the following manipulations:

  1. Turn out a new shaft onto which the cutting blades for the circular saw will be mounted.
  2. At least 20 cutting discs are used, which must be mounted on the shaft with a distance of 10 mm from each other. To maintain this distance, plastic washers are used when placing disks on the shaft.

  3. The teeth of the discs should be arranged in a chaotic manner for more efficient crushing of branches from which chips will be obtained. Arranging the teeth in a row is strictly contraindicated, as it increases the likelihood of impacts. The optimal arrangement of crusher disks is in the form of a herringbone, which will not only ensure high grinding efficiency, but will also simplify the subsequent cleaning of the cutting elements.

  4. Particular attention is paid to the hopper and the receiving part, for the manufacture of which sheet steel and a welding machine are used.
  5. A pulley is attached to the shaft, which will be connected to the electric motor via a belt drive.

The appearance of the finished chopper for branches made from a circular saw is shown in the photo below.

It is also worth noting that the chopper is assembled on a separate frame and is rigidly fixed to the circular saw table by welding. In this case, the functionality of a circular saw is retained, which can be used at any time.

The resulting unit can be used for commercial purposes, because the crushed material is wood chips, which is used to prepare natural smoked meats. The video below shows a similar version of a crusher assembled from a set of saw blades driven by an internal combustion engine from a walk-behind tractor.

How to make a garden shredder from an ordinary drill

If the electric motor of an angle grinder can cope with crushing small branches, then when using an electric drill, it is important to understand that its drive is much weaker. You can use a drill to chop grass and leaves. The finished material is used to feed domestic animals, such as chickens. The principle of making a grinder from a drill is to perform the following manipulations:

  1. A wooden stool is used as a bed, in which a hole is drilled for installing a power tool.
  2. A plastic bucket will serve as a bunker. It will carry out the entire process of grinding the material.
  3. P18 steel is used to make the knife. The blades are sharpened at an angle, and the knife is mounted on a pre-prepared shaft made from an ordinary threaded rod.
  4. The shaft with the knife is mounted in the tool chuck, after which you can begin testing the homemade tool.

You shouldn’t expect high performance from such a tool, but for crushing grass and leaves, this is the best solution. After all, at minimal cost, you get an effective unit that can also cope with crushing feed pumpkin, corn and other crops for farm animals.

Instructions for making your own wood chipper from a gasoline engine

To chop large branches you will need an appropriately powerful drive. If the farm has an internal combustion engine (for example, from a walk-behind tractor or chainsaw), then it can be used to make a highly efficient and reliable machine for crushing branches with a diameter of up to 15 cm. Before considering the process of manufacturing such a unit, it should be noted that as a drive You can also use an electric motor of appropriate power.

The process of making a single-drum wood chipper with your own hands from a gasoline engine involves performing the following steps:

  1. Initially, the cutting mechanism is manufactured. Its components are such parts as a shaft, a drum blade, a pulley and a flywheel. All these components are fixed on a pre-prepared frame made of metal corners and a channel. The appearance of the cutting mechanism is shown in the photo below.

  2. The cutting element is created from a cylinder and six steel plates, which are welded to the walls of the base. Holes are drilled in the plates to which the knives will be attached.

  3. The knife for the crusher is made of high-speed steel R6M5 with a thickness of at least 5 mm, and is sharpened at an angle of 30-35 degrees.

  4. The knives are attached to the drum using bolt connectors. It is very important that during the rotation of the drum the knives do not touch the base of the structure, but at the same time the gap is minimal, as shown in the photo.

  5. Using two channels of equal size, a frame is made in which a shaft mounted on bearings is fixed.

  6. A pulley is attached to the base of the shaft on one side, through which the shaft will be driven by an internal combustion engine or electric motor.

  7. On the other hand, a flywheel is mounted on the shaft. It plays the role of an eccentric, increasing the torque, as a result of which the operating efficiency of the installation increases.

  8. Metal corners are used to connect the channels. The structure is attached to a base, which can be used as a table from a circular saw.

After manufacturing the cutting mechanism, you will need to install a gasoline engine and build a bunker for transporting the crushed material.

  1. The engine is mounted in the upper part of the structure using bolts. You can use an electric motor from a circular saw, which can be located in the lower part. The motor shaft is connected to the driven shaft of the cutting mechanism using a belt drive. The advantages of this method of transmission mechanism were already mentioned at the beginning of the material.

  2. Sheet steel is used as a receiving hopper, which is bent in the shape of the letter U and attached to the frame of the cutting mechanism.

  3. On the other side of the cutting mechanism, a square pipe up to 1 meter long and of the appropriate cross-section is installed. Along it, the crushed material will be directed to the exit.

  4. A hole is cut in the bottom of the pipe through which the crushed material will exit. Here you can weld hooks for hanging a bag into which the wood chips will immediately flow.

This completes the process of making a homemade garden shredder from an internal combustion engine. A similar design can be used to crush branches of various sizes. The resulting fractions of crushed material are used as mulch or fertilizer. You can watch the video to see what a DIY petrol wood chipper is like in action.

What else can a chopper be made from?

When making a branch chopper with your own hands, any household appliances can be useful. When many home appliances reach the end of their useful life, they can be reused with some modification. The main necessary element is the engine; you just need to modify it and the mechanism acquires a second life in a new useful device.

Wind chopper from a walk-behind tractor

To give a second life to the design of a walk-behind tractor that has expired, it is necessary to prepare the following materials:

  • walk-behind tractor directly
  • knives
  • shaft
  • bearing set
  • channel
  • a set of keys
  • grinder for cutting and cleaning work
  • sheet metal
  • drill and jar
  • hammer and electric planer

During assembly, the following manipulations should be carried out:

  • A frame is formed from a section of channel.
  • A shaft from an old electric plane is installed on the bed.
  • A knife and a pulley are attached to the shaft to transmit torque from the engine.
  • The torque from the walk-behind tractor is transmitted to the pulley using a belt.
  • A receptacle for branches is formed from sheet metal by welding.
  • The entire assembly is installed on a prepared walk-behind tractor and carefully secured.
  • We start the mechanism, feed the branches into the shredder, the chips fall down where you can place the container.

Chopper from a set of circular saws

A do-it-yourself chopper made of this design is classified as the simplest. In order to power it, you need to select a motor with a power of up to 4 kW. The main cutting element consists of several circular saw blades, generally their number varies from 20 to 25.

Saw blades

The knife discs themselves are cutting blades with many teeth, onto which special carbide inserts are soldered, thanks to which the tool acquires increased characteristics. The knives are directly installed on a pre-made shaft up to 80 mm long, on which threads are cut on both sides to secure the tool.

Washers are placed between the discs on the shaft to separate them, since the saw teeth have a slight deviation from the plane to increase cutting properties. Due to the divergence of the teeth, placing the disks close together becomes impossible, so a washer with a diameter of 20 mm becomes a necessary element in the design.

Frame design

The electric motor is installed on a frame made from corners with your own hands using welding; a frame is attached to it directly under the shaft with cutting discs. Holes for bearings are made in the necessary elements, the shaft is inserted into them and secured.

Start-up

The loading conveyor is made of galvanized steel. Pre-cut sheets are fastened with rivets into a pyramid truncated at the top and attached to a frame on which saw blades are mounted. Pulleys are attached to the shafts of the engine and cutting tools, then belts are put on them, with their help the movement from the electric motor will be transmitted to the saws.

We supply power to the drive, branches and debris are loaded into the receiver, a set of disks grinds the material into chips, which fall down.

Important! During operation, safety requirements must be observed.

How to make a garden shredder with your own hands using a motor and circular saw

After spring pruning, most gardeners are faced with the problem of disposing of old branches. If you're a frugal DIYer who's used to putting in all the scraps you don't need, you'll probably end up throwing all your branches into the compost pile. There, it's all good rot, and in 3-4 years you will have the perfect organic fertilizer. compost. All this, of course, is wonderful, but it takes too long. If you pre-cut the branches and leaves on them, the compost will mature within a season and even a couple of months. And then you can come to the aid of a garden shredder. a device that will turn raw materials into chips or flour. The device for sale is not cheap, so we suggest you check out the instructions that will help you make your own garden shredder.

We will make such a bandura. let's go to!

Materials we need

We will not convince you that a homemade helicopter will be completely free. Naturally, some parts will be used to do this, which will cost money. However, on average, a homemade device will cost you 2 times less than a ready-made shredder from an advanced brand. Judge for yourself, for the chopper you will need:

  • Circular saws. 15-25 pieces
  • Motor. petrol or electric
  • Rod (rod) M20, washers and nuts for it
  • Pulley (for example, from a VAZ generator) and a narrow belt
  • Bearings
  • Metal pipe for frame
  • Sheet metal for bunker
  • Plastic washers 14-24 pcs.

Shredder for garden devices. we will identify the most important parts of the device

Crushing of material in a garden shredder is carried out using knives. In finished models, the knife is most often a metal disk with 2-3 cutting surfaces. A lot of work quickly leads to the teeth stopping, and they need to be undermined from time to time. you have to agree, it's not very convenient, and it also takes time. If you decide to make your own garden shredder, you won't be able to replicate these design flaws, but rather build a reliable, high-performing, and most importantly, durable knife.

We suggest using circular saws with carbide tips. This will require several disks, but several. get the system from them. plastic bag. In ready-made garden shredders, the blade is usually 3 cm thick, but we can also produce packaging of any thickness. everything will depend on the number of saws purchased. On average, for a quality knife 6-10 cm thick you need 15-25 pieces. Each blade has several teeth, originally designed for cutting hardwood. Therefore, grass, leaves and branches will look like seeds to them. In extreme cases, if the teeth on your saw become dull, there is nothing stopping you from heading to your local tool store and purchasing a replacement.

Circular saws can be successfully used as shredder knives

However, the knife. That's not all. To set it in motion, we need an engine. To quickly grind branches in small volumes, it is easier to use an electric motor. It may be a little inconvenient to use due to the cable and the need to plug into an outlet, but it operates almost silently and emits no exhaust fumes. The Motoblock has more power, making it ideal for when you want to crush rough material frequently and for a long time.

Step-by-step instructions and nuances of work

1. Saws are printed on an axis, the diameter of which is determined by the diameter of the disks (20 mm). An M20 threaded rod is suitable for this purpose. Accordingly, you will need washers and nuts of the same diameter.

Saws mounted on the axis of the future chopper

If we place the discs on the pin close to each other, the knife will not work. Here's why: The width of the saw's teeth is wider than the width of the blade itself, so when the teeth rotate, they will catch on each other. To prevent this from happening, you need to rotate the discs a short distance away. Make it easier with homemade washers that you can cut from thin plastic. Their number should be one less than the number of circular saws.

2. The pulley (from a VAZ generator or from a pump) is installed on a pin. To rotate the axis, two VAZ intermediate shaft bearings with an internal diameter of 20 mm are used.

3. The frame is welded from profiled metal pipes to which the engine block rod is attached. The motor is mounted on a frame so that it can be moved relative to the circular saws. This is necessary to change the tension of the drive belt, if necessary.

An axle with circular saws is attached to the frame

4. For ease of use, a fixed metal profile rod is mounted on a frame, which will be supported by branches and stems during crushing.

5. The cutting unit must be fitted with a metal casing, which is welded from sheet metal or cut from galvanized steel. For reliability, it is better to use the first option.

The body is best made of sheet iron. it's safer!

6. There is another hopper attached at the top with a slot for loading the material that needs to be crushed. There are no special requirements for this part, so most often it is made of flexible galvanized steel.

The buffer can easily be made of galvanized steel

Advantages of a homemade option

Unlike factory models, a homemade shredder does not require excessive caution. It will become a universal assistant in the household and will help not only chop off branches and other household debris, but also crush fruits (apples, pears, plums) along with bones. It is very convenient, if necessary, to make jam, mashed potatoes or homemade wine when the fruits are crushed to a paste-like state.

Circular saws, which form a single blade, are capable of processing fairly large pieces of wood. Of course, we are not talking about logs, but branches with a diameter of 10 cm will be quite “to the teeth”. This homemade shredder compares favorably with the factory product, the body of which simply does not allow large parts of the material to pass through. Accordingly, you will save a lot of time because you do not have to sort branches by size and think about where to place overly large fragments. In addition, there is no need to control the moisture content of the material, while a purchased shredder requires adjustment of the dampness of the raw material. The fact is that the most modern ready-made shredders, the electric motor is located at the bottom of the structure, so when wet stems are processed, moisture will inevitably get into the motor, which will lead to breakdown. In the home product you can decide where to install the motor, in the above version it is located horizontally, level with the blades.

It is also worth paying attention to saving money when using a homemade shredder. Firstly, production will initially be cheaper than buying a factory device, and secondly, “homemade” ones will not have to buy expensive spare parts in the event of a breakdown. All its elements are not expensive.

Home garden shredder is capable of breaking even large branches, turning them into chips

In addition, the homemade garden shredder is highly efficient. All waste loaded into the hopper will be pulled into the circular saws and disappear at incredible speed. Thus, a homemade device can be no worse than an expensive and modern garden tool. In a word, if you really need a shredder, but there is no money to buy it, this is the only way out. do it yourself!

The nuances of operating homemade equipment

Any homemade product is not always equipped with all the devices according to safety requirements. During operation, in order to avoid accidents, the following rules must be observed:

  • When starting work, you should use tight-fitting gloves, glasses and a hat; It is strictly forbidden to push branches and debris with your hands; for this you can use the next batch of tops.
  • The diameter of the material to be crushed must not exceed that allowed by the engine power; Do not allow hard materials to enter the cutting blade hopper; they can damage the blades and damage the engine.
  • If branches get stuck in the drum, the unit is completely de-energized, and only then are the stuck pieces removed.
  • The power wires are laid in places where branches will not lie and wood chips will not fall.

Correct and long-term use of a hand-made branch chopper is possible not only if operating conditions are observed, but also with proper storage. After chopping, the knives are cleaned, and the device itself is put away in a shed or under a shed, and the knives are sharpened if necessary. Almost anyone can build a branch crusher with their own hands, the main thing is to have an engine and the necessary metal blanks.
