Types of gearboxes for trimmers
It is worth noting that the basic components of cylindrical mechanisms are gear cylinders. Most trimmers are equipped with worm gears, but much depends on the manufacturer’s decision and other features.
A feature of the planetary type of gears is the coaxial arrangement of the shafts, while conical objects have an intersecting arrangement. Gear transmission is relevant only for those units that are used in certain temperature conditions. Moreover, for them any mechanical damage can be fatal.
Lubricate the brush cutter, brush cutter: rod, drive shaft and other spare parts.
The drive shaft, which is located inside the rod, transmits rotational movements from the engine to the trimmer gearbox, and that, in turn, to the knife or fishing line (depending on the type of cutting equipment of your unit). All of these components, including the shaft, also require a lubricant to help prevent premature wear, breakage, friction, grinding, overheating or breakage. It is imperative to lubricate the lawn mower before storing it for the winter, and also as needed when the parts make such a “request”. A few nuances in the procedure:
Gearbox lubricant appears in the service catalog as a separate product. Order it at a low cost and ensure long-lasting operation for your gearbox!
Algorithm for self-lubrication of the gearbox
To lubricate the transmission mechanism, preliminary disassembly is not necessary. The device already has a special hole for these purposes (it is shown in the photo below). In addition to the gears, when carrying out lubrication, you need to pay attention to the following elements of the mechanism:
- bearing unit;
- flywheel and starter coil pawl.
Fill in oil or add solid lubricant through a grease fitting closed with a screw. In this case, perform actions in the following sequence:
- clean the gearbox housing from dirt and adhering grass, especially carefully the area around the plug so that debris does not get inside the mechanism;
- using the appropriate tool (often it comes with the trimmer), unscrew the plug;
- the selected lubricant is injected into the open technological hole from a tube or using a syringe, as shown in the photo below;
- screw the plug into place.
When applying lubricant, you need to rotate the knife so that it is evenly distributed over the teeth of the moving gears.
If for any reason the gearbox needs to be disassembled , then the old lubricant must be completely removed from the entire surface of the gears, housing, and shaft, and only then a new one must be used. It is convenient to lubricate the disassembled mechanism with solid compounds.
The entire gearbox lubrication process is demonstrated in the video:
The transmission unit must be lubricated at least once a year, but it is recommended to do this every 20 hours of intensive use of the brush cutter . If the first signs of malfunctions with the mechanism appear, you need to add lubricant as quickly as possible.

How to lubricate a lawn mower gearbox
Brush cutter gearbox
Buying any equipment is a lottery, but a lot also depends on the gardener. In caring hands, Chinese samples last a long time and do not let their owners down at the wrong time. And if you forget to lubricate the brush cutter gearbox on time, do not clean the filters, or use cheap, low-quality gasoline, then garden equipment from the most famous brands will become a headache.
Lubrication of the brush cutter gearbox is one of the most important elements of maintenance of a gasoline trimmer, which must be carried out directly by the user.
Time and procedure for gearbox maintenance
I recommend that you carry out preventative maintenance on a new gasoline trimmer immediately after purchase, adding lubricant to the gearbox. Despite the high cost of gardening equipment, some manufacturers save money and add only the minimum amount of lubricant for the break-in period.
How often to lubricate the gearbox of a brush cutter
Often, a preventive inspection of the transmission with the addition of liquid grease is carried out once a year at the beginning or end of the season. If you do not use a gasoline trimmer professionally, this is enough.
For large mowing volumes, it is necessary to lubricate the brush cutter gearbox every 20-50 hours of operation. If the operating conditions of garden equipment are difficult, for example, a large field is mowed at the same time, and the lawn mower simply does not have time to cool down, or cheap lubricants are used, then the lubricant must be checked and added every 20 hours of operation.
Indirect evidence that the gearbox needs to be lubricated can be overheating or increased noise of the unit.
I also recommend a complete replacement of the lubricant, including disassembling and washing the unit, when purchasing a used gasoline trimmer.
Lubricant for the gearbox of a gasoline trimmer
Range of lubricants for garden equipment
According to the instructions, a special gear lubricant should be used to lubricate the bevel gearbox. As a rule, manufacturers of garden equipment produce and recommend chemicals of their brand as the most adapted to their devices.
At the same time, to reduce the cost of operating garden equipment and increase the attractiveness of the auto chemical brand, lubricants for garden equipment are usually produced as multifunctional ones. It is intended not only for lubricating the gearboxes of gasoline trimmers, but also for treating hoses, gears and gearboxes of any garden equipment and mechanical devices operating under high loads.
This gear lubricant is sold in tubes that are convenient for use and subsequent storage.
Even if the specialized lubricant for the gearbox is almost completely used up during operation, the additives still create an effective lubricating protective film on the surface of the gears.
It should be noted that many owners of brush cutters in the former CIS use regular Litol-24 or lithium-based grease for CV joints to lubricate the gearbox. It is convenient to fill the gearbox using a 5 cc medical syringe.
The undoubted advantage of using Litol and lithium-based grease for refueling the gear of a lawn mower is the reduction in cost of operation. But there are nuances due to which spears are broken on the Internet gardening forums. My thoughts on the topic of what can be lubricated with lithium-based lubricants and what cannot be read in the article “Litol as a lubricant for the gearbox of a lawn mower.”
How to lubricate the gearbox of a brush cutter or gasoline trimmer
Side bolt 17 on the gearbox of a gasoline trimmer
For safety reasons, in order to avoid accidental starting, all maintenance work on the lawn mower must be carried out with the electrical cap/plug removed from the spark plug. Do not turn the trimmer over to avoid gasoline leakage.
Unscrew the side screw on the brush cutter gearbox. Depending on the manufacturer of garden tools, instead of a hexagon screw, there may be a wrench bolt, usually 17. The thread is normal, unscrew it counterclockwise. Be careful not to lose the sealing washer.
Add specialized lubricant
If no grease is visible on the inner end of the screw, then you need to add 3 - 4 grams. Rotate the gear by hand, changing the direction of rotation so that the lubricant is distributed throughout the gears.
Then reinstall the screw, tightening it securely.
Main gearbox malfunctions and ways to eliminate them
Various breakdowns occur with the gearbox of an electric or gasoline trimmer. The most common of them are presented in the table below. There you can also find the causes of their occurrence and methods for eliminating them.
Gearbox malfunction | Possible causes of failure | Remedy |
the transmission unit gets very hot | use of inappropriate (poor quality) lubricant or its absence | need to replace or add lubricant |
The gears are new and not worn in | To break in, you should work for a short time without heavy loads with regular stops so that the mechanism has time to cool down
shaft jamming during rotation, backlash and knocking | destruction or significant wear of any of the bearings | replace the failed bearing with a new one |
the transmission mechanism flies off the mower bar or wobbles | damage to its body | part needs to be replaced |
in some cases, with minor damage, a clamp made of metal is used to tighten the area with the fracture
does not fit on the pipe | wear of the docking point | you can make a winding of insulating tape at the attachment point or change the rod |
the output shaft with the knife does not rotate or stops if the load increases | wear of teeth on gears or one of them | replacement of the interacting pair of worn parts is required |
Bearings fail due to the use of inappropriate lubricant or lack of lubricant. Also, their damage is caused by severe operating conditions of the brush cutter and the ingress of foreign particles of material (for example, broken metal teeth of mechanical gears) due to the fact that the integrity of the anthers is broken.
Diagnostics and repair of a typical UPPER GEARBOX of a brush cutter
To remove the bearing, you need to disassemble the gearbox and use a special puller. If it is not there, then you can try to do it with a hammer with an adapter. In this case, you should work carefully so as not to damage the seat. It is not recommended to use the preheating method to remove the bearing. This is due to the fact that the metal may lose the required performance characteristics.
Disassembly and repair of the upper gearbox of a trimmer brushcutter
If the knife stops rotating under load or even stands still, this is accompanied by an uncharacteristic sound.
Most gearbox problems can be easily fixed with your own hands. It is recommended to purchase replacement parts that are “original” and intended for the model of brush cutter used.
Malfunctions and their elimination
Electric and gasoline trimmers experience typical breakdowns and malfunctions. For devices powered by an internal combustion engine, these are:
- problems in the carburetor;
- engine breakdown;
- problems with the fuel system;
- breakdown of the gearbox, starter, muffler;
- blockages;
- air filter failure;
- problems with the ignition coil.
Electrical units have specific breakdowns:
- problems with the control button and electrical cable;
- burnt out motor stator winding;
- broken contacts.
For simple problems, you can repair the trimmer yourself.
Why won't the trimmer start?
The most common reason that the unit does not start is the use of low-quality fuel. Choosing gasoline grades lower than AI-92 can damage the lawn mower. If high-quality fuel is used, you need to look for other reasons. To do this, all components and systems are carefully checked. The following are subject to verification:
- spark plug and spark plug channel;
- air and fuel filter;
- breather;
- exhaust channel.
The device may not start after a long period of inactivity. Before turning on the trimmer, you need to carefully study the operating instructions. The solution to many problems is indicated in it.
If it stalls when you press the gas
There are several reasons why the trimmer stalls when you press the gas:
- The first reason is carburetor misadjustment.
- Fuel valve clogged.
- Check valve clogged.
- Loose and sagging carburetor cable or sagging fuel intake hose.
To avoid the described problems with the lawn mower, you need to carefully monitor the condition of the device and its components. Timely cleaning and washing of the unit and spare parts can increase its service life.
Starter breakdowns
The most difficult starter breakdown occurs when the rope breaks and winds around the flywheel of a running engine. As a result, the spring may burst and the pulley may break off. In this case, only a complete replacement of the spare part will help. Such a breakdown rarely occurs. More often it happens:
- break of the shmorgalka rope;
- spring breakage;
- spring failure.
In this case, it is easy to repair the starter yourself. The manufacturer has prepared step-by-step instructions for this.
Gearbox repair
Caring for the brush cutter gearbox involves timely lubrication of the unit. The absence of this can lead to rapid wear of the gears and jamming of the gear module.
Main malfunctions of the trimmer gearbox:
- strong heating of the transmission unit due to the use of low quality lubricant or its absence;
- shaft jamming when worn bearings rotate;
- wobbling or flying off the transmission mechanism rod as a result of damage to the housing;
- lack of rotation of the output shaft with the knife due to wear of the teeth on the gears.
This happens due to the use of low quality lubricant or its complete absence. Another reason for gearbox failure is operating the trimmer to the limit of its capabilities and getting foreign objects. To replace a faulty bearing, the gearbox is disassembled.
Features of repair of electric models
Electric models of trimmers operating from the mains contain several main blocks:
- a mechanical part that transmits torque to the trimmer head;
- Electrical engine;
- power cable.
Each electric trimmer unit has specific problems. In the mechanical part, they depend on the presence of a fishing line used as a cutting element. Reasons for termination:
- tangling of fishing line;
- sticking of nylon thread due to overheating of the trimmer;
- problems with the drive shaft and coil.
You can identify problems with the electrical part of the electric scythe using special tools:
- indicator screwdriver;
- multimeter;
- set of keys and screwdrivers.
To fix problems you need a blowtorch.
Electrical damage:
- power cable malfunction;
- problems with socket and plug;
- failure of the control knob;
- starter winding burns out, engine replacement required;
- Broken contacts can be corrected yourself using a blowtorch.
Repair and lubrication of the trimmer gearbox
With frequent, intensive use of the brush cutter , the gearbox may begin to heat up or make sounds uncharacteristic of its normal operation, for example, grinding. This indicates that the mechanism needs to be lubricated. If this is not done in time, then more serious problems will arise (for example, the gears will wear out quickly and will need to be replaced), even jamming. Other breakdowns also occur with the transmission mechanism. You can repair and lubricate the gearbox yourself - to do this, you just need to familiarize yourself with the features of this work and stock up on some available tools.
Trimmer gear lubrication
Lubrication of gears must be carried out regularly in accordance with the recommendations set out in the operating instructions for the model used. This should also be done if:
- new gears were installed;
- atypical sounds come from the gearbox when the trimmer is operating;
- The knives are difficult to rotate.
In addition to the gearbox, the trimmer shaft also needs to be lubricated regularly. This is the norm for proper care of the device.
With constant use of the trimmer, its transmission mechanism experiences stress from grass, dirt adhering to the blades, or due to changes in torque. You need to choose a high-quality lubricant to extend the life of the gearbox.
Types of lubricants used
When choosing a lubricant, the following factors must be taken into account:
- degree of adhesion of the composition to the metal of the assembly;
- product brand;
- lubricant consumption by the transmission mechanism.
Well-known manufacturers, for example, STIHL, Husqvarna and others, in addition to trimmers, also produce lubricants for them. Such products not only reduce wear, but also protect the gear metal from corrosion. Therefore, for brush cutters from these brands, it is better to use their own lubricants.
If the composition used for lubrication has good adhesion, then it is practically not squeezed out of the gearbox through the gaps.
Different models use lubricant differently. This is determined to a large extent by the intensity of use of the brush cutter and the heating of the transmission mechanism. It is considered that the lubricant is sufficient if the temperature of the gearbox during operation does not exceed 40°C.
By consistency, lubricants for trimmers can be:
- liquid;
- semi-liquid;
- hard;
- plastic.
Based on their composition, the following types of lubricants are in demand:
- graphite, which significantly reduces friction, resulting in improved gear rotation;
- lithium, which is also an excellent anti-corrosion composition, saturated with additives that increase the wear resistance of the metal without harmful substances;
- universal, containing highly refined mineral oils and performance-enhancing components.
Examples of suitable lubricants are: Champion EP-0, Gear Grease OREGON, Oleo-Mas, Azmol 158, Litol.24. You should also pay attention to manufacturers' advice on this issue and use the materials they offer. You can buy them at specialized retail outlets.

Gearbox lubrication algorithm
To lubricate the gearbox transmission mechanism, there is no need to disassemble the unit - for this there is a special hole in the upper part of the housing . In addition to the gears, elements such as the bearing assembly must be thoroughly lubricated. Wear of its sealed walls leads to the fact that the lubricant leaves the seat and vibration of the equipment begins. This problem is relevant for Chinese trimmers. The solution will be to replace the “original” bearings with high-quality parts. The flywheel is also subject to lubrication - during operation, the part is covered with grass fragments, creating additional resistance when mowing.
Important! It is also necessary to lubricate the starter coil pawl, since when starting it touches the grooves on the flywheel. This leads to wear and tear, as well as to the appearance of mechanochemical corrosion due to the fact that the parts are made of different materials (flywheel - aluminum, pawl - steel).
Solid lubricant or oil is placed inside through an opening protected by a screw. In this case, perform the following actions:
- the gearbox housing is carefully cleaned of dirt, especially near the plug, to prevent debris from getting inside the unit;
- A special device is supplied with the brush cutter; it is used to remove the plug;
- lubricant is injected into the hole from a tube or using a syringe, smoothly turning the cutting unit so that the substance is evenly distributed over the gear teeth;
- return the plug to its original place.
Advice! If it becomes necessary to disassemble the gearbox, you should remove the old grease from the housing, from the surface of the shaft and gears, and then apply new one. When disassembled, it is very convenient to lubricate parts with solid substances.
Lubrication of the gearbox must be carried out annually, and during intensive use this procedure should be performed every 20 hours of operation of the tool. If signs of breakdown appear, the lubrication points should be treated with the composition as soon as possible.
Trimmer gearbox device
gearbox is a unit that transmits the rotational movement of the motor shaft to a knife or fishing line. It is located at the lower end of the brushcutter . The transmission unit is also designed to reduce the trimmer engine speed.
READ Assembling the Gearbox of the Motoblock Neva MB 2
Depending on the model of the brush cutter , the mechanism consists of several gears rotating at high speed. As a result, they heat up due to strong friction. If there is not enough lubrication, or there is none at all, then the process leads to severe overheating and failure of parts, and, accordingly, the need to carry out complex repairs. To prevent this from happening, the transmission unit should be lubricated in a timely manner. The disassembled gearbox is shown in the photo below.
Gearboxes of modern trimmers of different models from different manufacturers differ from each other in design and seat size. It happens:
- round;
- in the form of an asterisk;
- square.
The most common diameters of round seats are 24, 25.5 and 26 mm.
Brush cutters are equipped with gearboxes with different types of gears:
- conical;
- worm;
- spiroid;
- cylindrical;
- planetary;
- wave;
- combined.
The drive shaft and gearbox are heavily loaded trimmer components that are highly susceptible to wear. Between them, motion is transmitted due to the interlocking of gear teeth located at different angles to each other. Gear transmission works effectively only if there are no mechanical damages. In this case, the mechanism should not overheat, otherwise it may jam.
Design and principle of operation of a trimmer gearbox
A gearbox is a device for transmitting rotation to the cutting part from the motor shaft. Its second purpose is to convert the angular speed of rotation of the output shaft to lower or higher speeds . In the first case, the device is called a “demultiplier” and is used on trimmers with powerful engines, in the second case it is called a “multiplier” and is installed on low-power tools. The gearbox is always located at the bottom of the rod of gasoline and electric scythes of different brands, be it “Champion”, Huter or another brand.
The gearbox structure looks like this: The main parts are a gear shaft (to transmit movement from the motor) and a gear mounted on the driven shaft (to rotate the cutting unit). To reduce the friction force during movement, rolling bearings are placed on the support points of the shafts. They are protected by special washers that preserve lubricant and prevent dirt from penetrating into the seat. All parts are placed in a duralumin housing with a special technological hole for lubricant injection. It is necessary so that you do not have to constantly disassemble the unit to perform lubrication.
Thus, the design of the gearbox, depending on the model and brand that produced the equipment (for example, Sterwins, “Foreman”), includes several gears interlocked with teeth to transmit rotation and moving at high speed. Due to significant friction, they get very hot.
Important! In the absence or insufficient lubrication, overheating of the gears occurs, followed by their breakdown, after which it becomes necessary to replace the damaged elements. To avoid such unpleasant consequences, it is necessary to use lubricant in a timely manner and treat the transmission unit with it.
How to replace a trimmer gearbox: algorithm of actions
To replace the gearbox with a similar part from the same manufacturer, it must first be disassembled and removed from the rod. They operate according to the following algorithm:
- loosen the coupling bolts located under the transmission mechanism;
- Using pliers, remove two corkscrew rings;
- using a puller, pull the bearings from the driven and drive shafts;
- then they assemble the mechanism, installing all the spare parts in the reverse order.
The disassembled transmission mechanism is shown in the photo below.
If you don’t have a puller at hand, you can try to carefully knock off the bearings. When they are stuck and do not budge at all, you can heat them with an industrial hair dryer (at a temperature of 600°C) and remove them.
Assembling the transfer unit is easier than disassembling it. It may only take a light tap with a hammer to seat the parts into place. After assembly, be sure to check that the driven shaft can be turned by hand.
When there is a need to replace the transfer unit with a non-original part, then their interchangeability should be taken into account. The following should be taken into account:
- rod diameter (this parameter is often 25.4 or 26 mm);
- parameters of the drive shaft - the shape of the connecting point and the diameter (its common value is 8 mm);
- option for securing protection.
If the considered parameters match, then it will be possible to install a part from other models.
Disassembling the cup of the upper gearbox of the scythe, trimer RemProst
Timely lubrication of the gearbox will ensure its long-term operation without repairs. In addition, modern materials protect metal well from corrosion and increase its wear resistance. When choosing, preference should be given to the lubricant recommended by the manufacturer of the trimmer being used. If it is not possible to purchase such compositions, then the considered or other analogues suitable for their properties should be used. When it is necessary to disassemble a mechanism during repairs, this should be done carefully so as not to damage individual parts.
Is it possible to make a coil for a trimmer with your own hands?
There are a large number of trimmer heads (not automatic) on sale, which are low priced and of good quality. But sometimes situations arise, for example, at the dacha, when the trimmer reel is broken and repair is impossible, the store is far away, and you need to mow. In this case, you can quickly, literally in a few minutes, make a simple trimmer attachment for securing a fishing line from ordinary plywood 10-12 mm thick.
- Take a piece of plywood or PCB and draw a circle on it with a diameter of about 14 cm.
- Cut out the disc using a jigsaw or hacksaw.
- Drill a hole in the center of the disk that matches the diameter of the gearbox shaft. Do not forget to put a washer on it before installing the disk on the shaft.
- You can screw small corners along the edges of the disk or make 1-2 holes on opposite sides. They will serve to thread fishing line into them.
- To secure the fishing line, you can screw several screws into the plywood.
This homemade mowing attachment is secured to the shaft with a nut. It is impossible to tighten or unscrew the nut without fixing the shaft. To replace the cord, it will be enough to loosen the screws, insert a piece of fishing line of the required length and press it again.
Also, the mowing attachment for attaching the fishing line to it can be made from a metal sheet. You can understand how to do this from the following video.
Upper gearbox
The upper gearbox, or as it is called, the bell, serves to transmit torque from the engine to the shaft through the frictional connection of the gearbox cup with the shaft washer to the lower gearbox. The shaft from the engine is connected to the friction cup using a spline connection. The connection at the end of the motor shaft can be 7, 9 splines or square. Squares can be large or small. Squares are mainly used for powerful trimmers.
In order to disassemble the upper gearbox, it is enough to remove the retaining rings in the special slots of the washer; after the retaining ring is removed from the socket, the clutch plate is removed. You should immediately look at the condition of the damper rubber washer on the body. To press the bearing from the shaft, it is necessary to remove the end retaining ring using standard pullers. Lubrication is required to maintain the splines. What kind of lubricant is used in the gearbox of a lawn mower. To lubricate the splines or square, standard Litol lubricant is used. You can buy lubricant for the gearbox of lawn mowers at specialized dealership centers that sell household appliances or on Internet resources. You can see how to disassemble the “bell” and replace the bearing in the video clip below.
Lower gearbox
On mowers driven by a trimmer with working attachments, an adapter bevel gearbox is provided. Torque transmission occurs through bevel gears. This type of gearbox is produced in two types: serviced and maintenance-free. The name serviceable - the gearbox gets its name from the ability to add lubricant to the working cavity to lubricate the gears. If the gearbox is not maintained, then the lubricant is supplied by the manufacturer for the entire service life, and the gearbox itself has a sealed housing. According to the developers of the manufacturer, such measures increase the service life of the gearbox, since contamination does not get inside through leaks in the lubrication hole. The gearbox of a lawn mower is the most loaded part, transmitting force with a change in direction, so proper care and proper lubrication are very important for the unit. What kind of lubricant is needed for the gearbox and repair of the bevel gear with replacement of bearings can be seen in the video below.

Rules for choosing a lubricant
Many companies that produce garden tools, such as Stihl and Husqvarna, produce their own lubricants for their products. In this case, it is recommended to use just such products - they best reduce equipment wear. If the original lubricant is not available for the trimmer, several factors should be taken into account when choosing a composition:
- quality of products of the brand that produces the lubricant;
- viscosity of the composition - this parameter is affected by the torque of the shaft;
- adhesion to the surface of the components of the assembly;
- consumption of lubricating coating - you need to take into account the air temperature, the type and volume of work performed.
Advice! If it is difficult to choose a lubricant, it is better to purchase a universal composition. It usually contains a number of additional components that protect the gearbox and extend its service life.
According to their consistency, lubricants can be liquid or semi-liquid, containing various additives and additives, as well as plastic and solid . The ductile ones are the most common, while the hard ones represent their original state. The most popular compositions are:
- graphite lubricants that reduce friction and improve gear movement;
- lithium compounds with high anti-corrosion properties and additives that reduce metal wear;
- universal substances containing mineral oils and additives that increase the performance properties of the gearbox.
The most common lubricants include: Litol-24, Champion EP-0, Azmol 158, as well as the production composition.
Engine starting
ICEs of household mowers are equipped with manual starters. The starter device is simple: a strong cord is wound onto a drum, which is directly or through a gearbox connected to the crankshaft, the start is made by sharply pulling the cord, and the drum unwinds, driving the crankshaft, which in turn starts the engine. More complex models are equipped with an easy-to-start Flash Starter system. This system has a special mainspring, which is twisted through a ratchet by several pulls on the starter cord, accumulating kinetic energy. After which, a special release button is used to release the latch, and the spring unwinds along with the drum and crankshaft. “Easy start” ensures faster start-up and lower energy consumption for the owner. Also, for quick starting, an additional fuel supply to the carburetor is provided with a special button. To supply an additional portion of gasoline, you need to press the button once or twice. The starter gearbox is lubricated with oil intended for lubricating the gearbox.
STIHL lawn mowers are deservedly popular
STIHL lawn mowers Designed for caring for small areas to clearing large areas of weeds, shrubs and young trees. In this regard, they are usually divided into classes. The first class includes amateur devices of low power up to 1.2 hp. By design, “STIHL” amateur braids are produced with a curved shaft. which makes it possible to exclude the lower bevel gearbox from the design, which significantly reduces the cost and maintenance. Brush cutters with a curved bar are designed to work with cutting tools made of fishing line or polymer knives. They are convenient to use in garden plots with small areas.
The second class refers to universal units of average power up to 2.2 hp, intended for field and landscape work. In such designs, a straight rigid shaft is used, which makes it possible to equip this class with steel saw knives for attachments with which you can cut down bushes and small trees. The design provides for a serviceable bevel gearbox. What lubricant to use for the lawnmower gearbox. A special brand name “STIHL” or regular Russian lubricant Litol is used.
Engines from 6.3 to 8 hp are intended for professional use in forestry or gardening. Their name is brush cutters, these are the most powerful brush cutters for working over large areas, cutting down small bushes and trees. The arsenal of working tools includes saw blades for cleaning bushes with a diameter of up to 7 cm. Brush cutters are equipped with an anti-vibration system, which makes working with such a tool more comfortable. What kind of lubricant to lubricate the gearbox of a lawn mower with powerful drive mechanisms? The lubrication of the gearbox of a lawn mower "STIHL" is carried out with a special branded lubricant "STIHL" or Russian-made Litol 24.
Gasoline lawn mower repair
Lawn mowers use gasoline two-stroke internal combustion engines. When deciding how to make a lawn mower with your own hands, they often use engines from other household devices - chainsaws, compressors, motor plows and trimmers. The process of finding and eliminating problems of these engines is carried out according to one algorithm. Do-it-yourself repair of a gasoline lawn mower begins with determining the cause of the failure.
General diagram of a gasoline lawn mower
The engine starts and runs normally, but the blades do not rotate.
In this case, failure of the mechanical part is guaranteed or, alternatively, its attachment to the motor shaft is destroyed.
Do-it-yourself mechanical breakdown and repair of a Viking lawn mower
Doesn't start well, but runs fine
A do-it-yourself mechanical lawn mower with a gasoline engine does not start well, but works normally in operating modes (when gas is supplied). This malfunction can be caused by two reasons - a failure to adjust the idle air system in the carburetor or an incorrect fuel composition.
Detailed drawing of a gasoline lawn mower
To eliminate it, you should start with fuel, combine gasoline and oil of the required brands in the required proportions and pour this fuel into the tank to replace the old one. If this does not help, remove and disassemble the carburetor and adjust the idle system in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
The engine starts poorly and runs unstable in all modes
The most likely reasons: clogged fuel jets, clogged fuel filter, clogged air filter. To eliminate: the jets are purged with compressed air, the filters are changed or washed, depending on their design.

Engine starts but does not hold load
If the engine starts and idles, but does not hold the load well during operation. Most likely, “oxygen starvation” occurs. Do-it-yourself repairs of lawn mowers involve replacing or cleaning the air filter using the “purge method.”
Repairing lawn mowers if the engine does not start
It happens that despite the presence and normal supply of fuel, the engine does not start. Most often, the absence of signs of life indicates a failure of the ignition coil. If during visual inspection all electrical circuits are in order, then this coil will need to be replaced.
DIY lawn mower engine repair
A less common occurrence is severe carbon deposits or spark plug failure. Determined by visual inspection of the unscrewed spark plug. The most effective way to determine this malfunction is to replace the spark plug with another one that is known to be good. When wondering how to make a lawn mower if the engine does not start, pay attention to replacing the spark plugs with new ones, preferably more reliable ones.
How to make a lawn mower with your own hands video
Considering the peculiarity of the “field conditions” in which lawn mowers are operated, manufacturers of these devices have tried to protect their consumers as much as possible from possible problems. But, as you know, even a hand-made mechanical lawn mower, made with your own hands, can one day fail. We really hope that our advice will help you in this case and point your troubleshooting in the right direction.
Do-it-yourself lawn mower repairs
Repair of lawn mowers is carried out taking into account the operating principle and the cause of the unit failure. More often, the device fails 3-4 years after active use.
Repair of lawn mowers is necessary in the following cases:
- the device does not start;
- the unit quickly stalls after starting;
- the motor is not running at full power.
Causes of malfunction
Reasons why lawn mowers fail:
In the first case, you will need to replace the body, handles, blades and wheels for lawn mowers. When the knives are blocked, the unit mechanically stops. Such a breakdown is associated with an attempt to mow hard or tall grass. Repairing a mower involves freeing the cylinder from stuck grass and turning it in the other direction.
Performance
The choice of petrol mowers, or they are also called by the name of the cutting device - trimmers, should be made based on the volume of work; the larger the area being processed, the more power is needed. For small areas, household trimmers are chosen; for garden plots, middle-class trimmers are suitable - farm trimmers; for mowing a large area, especially if there are thickets of weeds or bushes, you need a powerful professional tool - a park one. This technique has an engine power of more than 2.5 hp. and can work 3-4 hours a day.
Rod and drive of the working element
The rod has two very important functions: the first - it forms a rigid frame of the entire structure, the second - a shaft passes inside the hollow metal rod, which connects the working element with the engine. By the appearance of the rod, you can determine the class of the tool; if the rod is curved, this is convenient for work, but in this case the drive is a flexible shaft, which cannot transmit large torque. If the rod is straight, there is a rigid metal rod inside, it is much more reliable and it can transmit more torque. Therefore, professional tools always have straight shafts.
Drive motors
Most mowers are equipped with a gasoline engine (ICE), it can be two-stroke or four-stroke, there is no particular difference between them. The four-stroke is more economical and powerful, but more difficult to maintain and more expensive to repair. The two-stroke is easier to maintain, cheaper, but low-power, consumes more fuel, and has a dirtier and noisier exhaust. There are also combined engines. In addition to gasoline engines, trimmers can be equipped with electric motors that are connected to a 220V household network with a long cable, but, as a rule, these are household devices that are connected to the power supply wires.
Lubricant for lawnmower gearbox
After the snow cover disappears with the first days of spring, grass begins to appear, which pleases with a delicate green cover. However, literally after a few weeks all the irregularities and flaws become noticeable, and the weeds begin to rise above the lawn. From this moment the time of struggle for the beauty of the lawn begins. Of course, you can use a regular scythe or sickle to control weeds, but this is time-consuming and labor-intensive, and the cut grass becomes unsightly.
