The longer the blades of the device, the lower the number of revolutions it can be used due to the increase in linear speed. But its power must increase in order to cope with the increasing load. In practice, it has been proven that for home needs a device with a power of one kilowatt and an engine speed of one and a half thousand is sufficient. Moreover, the working plane is half a meter. In the case when the engine power is less than these indicators, then you need to regularly sharpen the blades to obtain the desired result.

To save money, wheels and material for handles can be taken from an old baby stroller. When choosing the diameter of the wheels, it is necessary to take into account that the distance between the ground and the blade should be no more than 5 centimeters. If possible, you need to adjust the ride height of the lawn mower. When the cutting part of the device consists of two elements, then maneuverability indicators improve, and if it consists of 3-4, then reliability. Such wheels can also be made of plywood and mounted on a shaft with bearings.

The blade guard can be made from plywood, a steel barrel, or the body of an old washing machine. Moreover, holes must be made in such an element of the lawn mower for the normal functioning of the electric motor and for air to enter the closed part of the lawn mower.

The body of the washing machine can also be used to create a casing around the blades. Spars for the motor are made of plywood or sheet steel. The cord for connecting the device to the network must be selected taking into account the power of the motor. Alternatively, you can take it from old devices.

In order to make a lawn mower blade with your own hands, as well as all other structural elements, you need to prepare the required materials in advance:

  • electric drill;
  • hammer;
  • grinder with disc;
  • jigsaw with a set of files;
  • pencil;
  • roulette;
  • pliers;
  • vice;
  • sandpaper;
  • screwdriver;
  • welding;
  • wires;
  • on/off button;
  • set of bolts and nuts;
  • corners;
  • wooden bars.

As an alternative to a grinder or jigsaw, you can use a hacksaw for metal or wood, but with small teeth. And also, experts always recommend making a drawing of the device being manufactured in order to have an idea of ​​the future design.

  • Pulleys,
  • Screwdriver and hammer.

To make a grass cutter, you need to attach the engine with the shaft and box to the frame. A homemade grass cutter made from a grinder will use a motor from the saw itself, which will transmit voltage to the shaft. Knives or discs are attached to the rotating shaft. You can use blender blades. A box is also attached to the frame in which the grinding takes place. It can be metal or wooden, and another one is installed under it, for already chopped grass. The bottom of the box is made of mesh, through which the chopped grass will be sifted.

Grass cutter from washing machine

From a washing machine you can make a universal device that can be used both as a grain crusher and as a grass cutter. Before making the device, you need to make two sharp knives. Their size should be smaller than the diameter of the machine drum. Using bolts, a second engine is mounted under the cover of the machine. One of the knives is mounted above the washing machine motor, and the second is mounted on the additional motor. An important point is that the knives must rotate in different directions. To fill the material, a hole with a funnel is made in the lid. Remove the drain hose from the washing machine, enlarge the hole, and place a box under it. The already chopped grass will spill out through this hole.

There are no standard drawings for such a grass cutter, since washing machines have many varieties and features.

The second version of the grass cutter involves using only the body of the washing machine. A hole is drilled at the bottom of the body, under which containers for chopped grass are placed. The engine is secured inside the housing with special clamps. A bushing with blades is bolted to the engine - the device is ready for use.

Grass cutter from a vacuum cleaner

You can also make a grass cutter from a Typhoon vacuum cleaner. It is convenient in that it allows you to feed raw materials through the top hole, and the already cut grass will pour out through the bottom hole. If you don’t have a vacuum cleaner housing, you can use a piece of pipe and a motor with a power of about 180 W, as well as a sleeve, knives and a profile. To install the shaft, two holes are drilled on the sleeve. A motor is attached to the body, on which a shaft with knives mounted on it is placed. It is advisable that the knives be sharpened on both sides.

Principles of operation of an electric motor

Such a motor can be either single-phase, which operates from a regular network, or three-phase, which requires additional electricity. When connecting an electric motor, you must always remember personal safety. For a motor operating on one phase, RCD protection must be installed, and a three-phase motor must have appropriate capacitors.

For a home lawn mower, you can also use a drill with speeds of up to three thousand. When assembling the structure, it is necessary to correctly select the power of the mower for its swathing. A cordless or electric drill mounted on a base or platform will perform its tasks efficiently, and the grass will be mowed.

Step-by-step assembly instructions

Depending on the source materials for the electric lawn mower, these steps will differ. One of the most common options is to assemble a mower from an old washing machine. It will be useful to consider the step-by-step instructions for creating such a device.

Actions should occur in the following sequence:

  1. Manufacturing a frame or spars for an engine of a future design. It needs to be made from a metal or steel sheet 500 by 500 millimeters.
  2. A hole should be drilled in the central part of the sheet for the shaft of the electric motor.
  3. Corners are welded around the perimeter from the bottom of the metal sheet (spars). They can also be secured with bolts.
  4. Then you need to install the wheels. You can make them yourself from plywood or wood, or remove them from old appliances. They are placed on a shaft (metal axis).
  5. After this, the motor must be secured to the platform. To do this, it should either be welded on pre-mounted metal corners, or holes should be drilled for existing holes in the motor itself, and then bolted together.
  6. Next you need to install a handle to control the structure.
  7. A protective cover for control is mounted under the platform.
  8. A metal knife (homemade or ready-made) is installed. It is attached to the electric motor shaft.
  9. To protect the motor from grass, it is necessary to mount a tin can on its shaft.

All mechanical parts are assembled. Next you need to proceed to the electrical circuit of the structure.

To do this you need:

  • install the switch and switch in a convenient place near the handle of the device;
  • connect the power cable with plug;
  • installation of RCD.

The container for collecting grass should be installed at the very end. It is made in the form of a box or bag.

The electric motor for a bicycle is powered by a battery, which, depending on the power of the unit (it is taken 0.35-1.2 kW), lasts from 30 minutes to 2 hours.

To convert a bicycle, two- or four-stroke gasoline engines are used. The latter option consumes less fuel and is less noisy during operation. The recommended power is from 1.5 hp, and the optimal option is 2 hp. When using a motor with a lower parameter, the motorbike will barely move or will not be able to move at all.

The rotational movement from the gasoline engine to the bicycle wheel occurs through the use of a belt or chain drive. Because of this, you will additionally need to make the following details:

  • a metal suspension in the form of a frame with sides to secure the motor to the bicycle frame;
  • driven and driven pulleys or sprockets for attachment to the engine and wheel, respectively.

The dimensions of the frame for the engine depend on its dimensions. The suspension itself is secured to the frame of the motorbike:

Sequence of assembly of the structure

To independently assemble a bicycle with a gasoline engine, you will also need, in addition to the materials and parts considered, the following:

  • controller;
  • cable for adjusting motor operation;
  • fuse;
  • welded exhaust pipe;
  • sleeve;
  • washers;
  • bolts;
  • chain tensioner.

The motorbike is assembled according to the following algorithm:

  • put a sprocket on the rear bicycle wheel;
  • use a clamp to fix the engine (with a sprocket on the shaft) on the frame behind the seat or on the trunk, if the design features of the bicycle allow, otherwise you will need to choose another convenient place for this purpose;
  • put the chain on the sprockets of the wheel and motor;
  • attach the tensioner;
  • adjust chain tension;
  • fix the throttle;
  • stretch a cable from it to the engine;
  • secure the fuel tank;
  • install the carburetor.

For the purpose of personal safety when operating a motorbike, the braking system is modernized, the wheel tires are replaced with non-slip products, and the integrity and stability in motion of the created structure is checked. After the entire structure is assembled, it is tested, having previously been inspected for defects.

Construction from an angle grinder

There are quite a few ways to create such a device. The simplest is to bolt it to a pre-prepared platform or base.

The most common option is to assemble such a homemade product using a baby stroller.

To do this you need:

  • Disassemble the stroller, but leave the base with wheels.
  • Prepare a board that will rest on the wheel axles.
  • Secure it.
  • Attach the grinder to the board with ties or clamps.
  • You need to install blades or fishing line on the grinder.
  • Attach the switch to the handle.

This design can be equipped with a protective cover to prevent grass from flying to the sides, or with a container for collecting waste.

  • using a tool that is not marketable, but has not lost its functionality;

In this model, the height is not adjustable, and due to this, it is not always possible to cut the lawn evenly.   • To make the body, you need to cut off the upper or lower part from an empty gas cylinder. Having found the center of the convex bottom, cut it out with a grinder and weld an even piece of sheet steel.
  • The next step is to make a clamp (1 or 2) for attaching the grinder to the body. It can be made
    from a piece of pipe or thick steel. Make a hole in the center of the body across the diameter of the clamp and weld it.

  • Cut and sharpen the knife for the future trimmer. Weld a long nut to the center of the workpiece. To prevent grass from wrapping around the axle, you can weld a piece of pipe above the axle, weld the end and drill a hole for the nut.
  • Next you need to prepare the axles for the wheels: drill them lengthwise, cut threads for the screws and screw the wheels. Weld the finished axles to the iron body, and, if necessary, make iron shields for secure fastening.
  • The final step is painting and assembling the structure. You can start working.

From a vacuum cleaner

When making a homemade trimmer from a vacuum cleaner motor, the latter is mounted on a rod. The knives are installed on the motor shaft and covered with a protective casing. Instead of knives, you can use an iron disk with fishing line. The engine is also covered with a casing, this will protect it from dust and dirt. To provide additional cooling, it is necessary to install a cooling device. It is made from a disk with curved blades (fan) and mounted under a washer through which the trimmer line passes. Air enters from above through a hose and cools the engine.

From a chainsaw

Because the chainsaw engine is heavy, it cannot be used to make a bottom-drive trimmer, but you can make a wheeled lawn mower. Production process:

  • First, a cart is made from a 25x25 mm corner. Its dimensions are 500×600 mm.
  • Wheels are installed at the corners of the structure.
  • The gas cable and fuel hose are extended.
  • The tire and steering wheel are unscrewed. A handle is made from a water pipe on which the steering wheel is mounted.
  • When installing the motor on the frame, the shaft must be located at the bottom of the structure. With all this, the gearbox is rotated at 90°C.
  • Then the cutting unit is mounted on the tool shaft.

A knife is welded to the second part of the pipe. Due to the highest performance of the motor, it is possible to make a cutting disc from metal with a width of 4 mm and a diameter of up to 180 mm. Knives 120 mm long and 30 mm wide are bolted to the disk. An ancient two-handed hacksaw would be a good material for their production. A similar cutting unit is suitable for tall and thick grass - the motor power is enough to handle it, and at the same time the knives will not quickly become dull and become unusable.

The author of this homemade product has found another use for an angle grinder; now, in addition to its intended purpose, he also mows the lawn near his house.

The author took a part of a car disk as the basis for the case.

A disc from a stamped car wheel was cut into two parts, one part was needed, a cover was welded to it, and a used circular saw disc fit.

An opening is cut into the side of the disk; this will be the front of the mower.

Next, the wheels and handle were attached to the body. Holes were drilled in the grinder's protective casing, and the grinder was secured to the mower body with bolts.

The mower blade is made of hardened steel, the edges of the knife are sharpened with emery and deployed in the shape of a propeller.

We attach the knife to the angle grinder shaft in the following way: screw a nut with an extended nut onto the shaft (the shaft has an M14 thread), screw the knife on with a bolt screwed into the nut.

The power button on the grinder itself was secured with a piece of wood.

A switch and a plug for connecting an extension cord are attached to the handle of the mower.

For the mower, you need to add an extension cord or a soft double wire with a cross-section of 2.5, a socket, a switch and a plug. Cut the wire from the side of the socket 30 cm and insert the switch (preferably from a drill or grinder of the same power)


In my case, I will not use the grinder, so I removed part of the grinder body with the button to reduce the size.


The main thing is to close all the holes for cooling, I sealed them with tape, and the case with a part from a plastic bottle.

Since the ventilation is closed, it is necessary not to overload.

All parts of the mower are assembled from improvised means, the body and handle are taken from the heating pipe 15, the mounting with an angle grinder is a steel plate from 2 to 3 mm, bent at an angle of 90 degrees, and welded to the pipe at an angle of 45 degrees.

All dimensions in the photo of the mount are indicated for an angle grinder with a 180mm disc. Therefore, the holes for the bolts must be adjusted to the dimensions of the angle grinder body.


The switch was moved to the edge of the case, adding 1.5 m. copper wire 2.5 sec., and secured with electrical tape, pre-insulated (inserted into the camera from the bicycle)

The most important and difficult detail in my case is the fastening of the fishing line. It took me several months to test different versions of the mounts to achieve the desired result. The fastening is made from two old diamond discs for stone. The core of the disk is cut out with a grinder as in the photo.

We grind down more corners, then we put this core of the disk on a grinder, and do not press too hard, we sharpen it on an emery stone to a circle of diameter 90mm. 2 pcs.


We mark the diameter as 50mm. on one and drill holes as in the photo. Holes 4.5 and 3.5 are for fishing line 4 and 3 diameters. You can also drill 2.5 for 2.5 fishing line. We attach the fishing line as in the photo, the fishing line is 18 cm. insert into the holes and bend.

The long edge of the fishing line should be between the two disks; press the nut harder (turn the nut over).

More than three years have passed, everything works!

I added a speed controller and mowing became much better. If there is little grass and the grass is young, I reduce the speed so as not to strain the engine.

I also removed the fishing line fastening that I described at the beginning. I left the standard factory mounting of the discs and use them to clamp the fishing line

(only the fishing line must be thick, I mean 4 mm) otherwise it will curl.

You can mow everything, but don’t forget about safety precautions and special clothing!

The basis of high-quality electrical crafts

You can easily make an electric scythe from a grinder with your own hands. The main thing is that this craft is of high quality and is constantly used until completely worn out. Then it can be used for different types of work.

A garden trimmer is quick to make with your own hands and durable in use.

Lawn mowing does not require any special requirements for homemade trimmers. Minimum devices required to connect the device:

  • Simple extension, 2.5 mm thick;
  • Electrical plug;
  • Working switch.

The garden trimmer itself has the following components:

  1. A body with a vent hole, which is covered with part of a PET bottle.
  2. There is a steel strip 20 cm by 8 cm that goes around the body.
  3. Bolts holding all the holes together.
  4. Handle welded to a 15-inch round pipe.
  5. Electrical tape covering all connections. For example: switch, plug, welded nuts M10, pipes, etc.

In the design, there must be at least two diamond discs. They are fastened to the base with fishing line. Cut to required size. They are no more than 9 cm in diameter.

To fasten all prepared parts, holes ranging in size from 2.5 mm to 4.5 mm are drilled. All of them are distributed evenly throughout the trimmer. So that the tightened nuts do not interfere with each other.

How to make a lawn mower with your own hands

You can make a lawn mower with a gasoline or electric engine. Gasoline ones are used for large areas; they are not tied to electrical power. In small summer cottages with a small amount of work, electrical devices are used. The unit consists of the following elements:

The engine is mounted on the platform, the cutter is mounted under it. The handle and lever are attached to the platform itself. Self-propelled homemade mowers will keep your lawn in excellent condition.

From the washing machine

If desired, a home craftsman can create a lawn mower with his own hands from a washing machine. An inexpensive lawn mower made from a washing machine includes the following parts:

  • washing machine motor;
  • steel knives;
  • trolley wheels;
  • pipe for handle;
  • electrical wire;
  • switch;
  • fork.

To make a homemade product, you can use a 180 W motor with a capacitor and a start relay. This motor is taken from a washing machine. It is worth choosing or making wheels from plywood. They should be placed at a distance of 5-6 cm from the soil surface.

This distance is the cutting height of the grass. The number of wheels can be 4, 3, 2. The sheet should have dimensions of 30x50 cm. Knives are made of steel with a width of 20-50 mm and a thickness of 2-3 mm. The cutting side is slightly curved downwards, this will protect the shaft from debris and grass. The handle is made by bending a pipe to make it convenient to support the unit. The handle is attached to the frame by welding.

A platform made of sheet metal is installed on the chassis of the trolley. A handle is made from the pipes and fixed to the platform by welding. Make a hole for the motor shaft. A steel protective grille is welded to the front of the frame. The top and bottom of the grille are screwed on with screws, and wire is welded to them.

The grid of an electric lawn mower provides clearance for the blade. The engine is fixed on the platform, its shaft must fit into the cut hole. A cutter with sharpened teeth is placed on the shaft. A hole is drilled in the middle.

The knife must be balanced and centered. The engine is covered with a casing to protect it from grass. Since the motor must be cooled during operation, holes are provided in the casing. Now connect the wiring to the motor and secure it. The metal handle must be wrapped in a rubber casing to protect it from electricity. Then an opening is created in the side of the disk where the front of the mower will be. The wheels and handle are attached to the body. Holes are made in the casing of the angle grinder or trimmer. Quite often, owners of small country houses need motorized devices that can facilitate the very labor-intensive work of removing snow from the surrounding area.
Factory-made snow blowers are relatively expensive, and not every homeowner can afford one. However, having certain skills in plumbing and electrical installation work, he can easily make a small rotary snow blower on his own, using a gasoline trimmer with a straight rod. Most suitable for making a snow blower is a powerful brush cutter, in which torque is transmitted to the mowing head (blade) through a rigid shaft and gearbox, for example, the Echo SRM-35ES or its analogues.

Materials and tools

To make such a snow blower you will need:

  • welding machine;
  • Bulgarian;
  • drill;
  • a piece of steel pipe about 300 mm long;
  • steel sheet 1.5 mm thick;
  • toothed disc (included in the scope of supply of the brush cutter);
  • a small barrel (for example, a beer barrel).

Work algorithm

Make parts and assemble the snow blower in the following order:

  • the barrel is cut in a circle, approximately 150 mm away from the bottom;
  • a hole is cut out in the lower part of the barrel for the protruding part of the gearbox;
  • on the same side, holes are drilled that coincide in location with the holes on the gearbox shield;
  • a square hole measuring 100x100 mm is cut out on the side, which will serve to throw out snow;
  • the resulting workpiece is covered 1/3 with a steel sheet on top.

A deflector is made from the remains of the barrel. To do this, cut out a metal strip with dimensions of about 150x300 mm, and then the resulting workpiece is bent and sidewalls no more than 100 mm high are welded to it. Next, the resulting deflector is welded to the body.

Then a blade is made, for which a blank measuring 300x400 mm is cut out of a steel sheet, the edges of which are bent to form sides about 20 mm high. The finished blade is attached to the bottom of the body. This completes the manufacture of the snow blower casing. It is attached to the trimmer gearbox through the holes at the bottom.

Now you need to make the rotor blades, for which, first of all, 4 blanks measuring 250x100 mm are cut out of a steel sheet. Each resulting part is shaped like a shovel, and one of the corners is cut off, thus obtaining finished blades. They are then welded to a toothed disk, which is then screwed to the gearbox shaft instead of the trimmer blades. That's it - the snow blower is assembled and ready for use. How to make a rotary mower

A do-it-yourself rotary mower, useful for dacha farming, is done like this. A homemade rotary mower-cultivator of rotational action is made from the rear axle of a VAZ. To work you need:

  • disks;
  • gear chain;
  • metal cutters;
  • tavern;
  • opener

An inexpensive homemade rotary mower is made like this. It is necessary to make holes on the disks. Then attach the shredder to the opener, and the knives to the shredder. Preparatory activities

Cutting grass from a brush cutter is done in a series of steps. First, prepare it in a container where the grass and branches will be ground:

  • make markings on the bottom (along the perimeter) for four trapezoidal holes with rounded corners;
  • drill holes with a cross section of 1 cm in each drawn sector;
  • a jigsaw file is inserted into them and trapezoids are cut out;
  • treat the sections with ratfil or sandpaper;
  • a hole is drilled in the center of the bottom for the chopper shaft;
  • a circle is cut out of a metal mesh with dimensions along the diameter of the bottom;
  • Using small scraps of boards or blocks, the prepared mesh piece is secured to the container from below;

  • disassemble the trimmer, disconnecting the motor, rod and cutting attachment from each other;
  • cut a piece approximately 20-40 cm long from the rod with the cable;
  • collect the lawn mower;
  • inspect the performance of the equipment.

How to make a mechanical mower with your own hands

You can make an inexpensive manually operated mechanical lawn mower that is useful for the household. Two types of knives should be made: the first ones rotate and collect grass, the second ones are stationary and cut plants. Using transmission from gears and wheels, it is necessary to create the required rotation speed of the knives. The grass needs to be cut using the scissors method. Then you need to fulfill the conditions for the operation of the knives, between which there is grass. The elements should be given a curved shape for continuous cutting of grass.
