Choosing a brand of gasoline for trimmers

You need to select the brand of gasoline for motor mowers taking into account the manufacturer’s recommendations. If you do not follow them, the motor will soon break down. Often, unleaded fuel with an octane rating of 92 or 95 is used to fill the trimmer's gas tank.

Fuel mixture for two-stroke engines

Trimmers that are equipped with a two-stroke engine do not have a separate system designed to supply oil to lubricate the rubbing parts. For this reason, such devices should not be refueled with pure gasoline, but with a mixture of fuel and motor oil. The latter should be specifically designed for two-stroke engines. The use of automotive engine fluid will lead to premature engine failure.


Preparation of fuel mixture for two-wheel engines

A lawn mower with a two-stroke engine needs to be refueled with AI-92 gasoline. When using AI-95, overheating of the engine and uneven operation of the unit may occur. You need to mix gasoline and oil in a ratio of 50:1, where 50 is fuel and 1 is oil. It turns out that 1 liter of fuel will require 20 ml of oil.

If the motor is worn out or the tool is working under high load, then the proportion is 25:1. If there is not enough lubrication, scoring will appear on the cylinder walls and piston surface. Then the piston ring will be destroyed, causing the engine to seize. An excess is not so critical, but it can lead to the formation of soot. The piston ring will become coked, which will reduce the power of the device.

Specific malfunctions when ignoring the manufacturer’s recommendations lead to the following problems:

  • overheating of the engine and the appearance of carbon deposits on spark plugs and cylinders;
  • loosening of the piston-valve system;
  • unstable engine operation (frequent stalling, “sneezing” during operation);
  • a drop in efficiency and significant gasoline costs.

If you pour more oil into a two-stroke engine than required, the valves will become clogged with resinous fractions formed during fuel combustion, and the engine will begin to knock during operation. A thorough engine flush will be required using lighter gasolines mixed with alcohol.

If there is insufficient or complete absence of oil, the valves will wear out faster due to excessive friction and increased vibration levels. This will lead to their incomplete closure, and the mower will emit a lot of unburned gasoline vapor mixed with black-blue smoke.

How to refill the trimmer

The prepared mixture of gasoline and oil can be stored for no more than 3 months (pure gasoline can be stored less). Dilute the fuel in an amount that is enough for several uses of the trimmer. In general, prepare:

  • gasoline and oil, which is suitable for two-stroke engines with an air cooling system;
  • metal canister and mixing container;
  • respirator;
  • gloves.

  1. Pour 1 liter of gasoline into a container of suitable volume and add 1/2 of the required amount of oil.
  2. Stir carefully, being at a good distance from sources of open flame.
  3. Add the remaining half of the oil to the fuel and mix everything again.


The trimmer refueling process
General recommendations for refueling a trimmer with a two- or four-stroke engine:

  • Place the fuel tank so that the cap is on top, then fill in the required amount of fuel.
  • Do not overfill the fuel tank. This will lead to one of the problems: overflow into the intake pipe and fuel filter, ignition of the fuel or engine breakdown.
  • Try to pour the mixture so that it does not spill. To do this, you can use a watering can.
  • If you do spill fuel, wipe it up immediately. Dispose of cleaning material; do not accumulate it indoors - it is a fire hazard.
  • Start-up of the device should begin after the fuel canister has been removed to a distance of more than 10 m.
  • If there was a long break between uses of the mower, be sure to drain the remaining old fuel.

Gasoline for lawn mowers: which one to choose and how to dilute it?

For those people who have a dacha or a country house, very often there are difficulties with overgrown grass on the site. As a rule, it needs to be mowed and overgrown several times a season. Currently, the market offers a wide selection of gardening equipment. One of these helpers is a lawn mower, in other words, a trimmer. For efficient and long-term operation of such equipment, it is necessary to refuel it with high-quality fuel or properly prepared fuel mixtures.

What kind of gasoline can be used in the trimmer?

Before determining what kind of gasoline can be poured into a trimmer, it is necessary to define some of the concepts used.

  • Trimmers can be with four-stroke or two-stroke engines. Four-stroke trimmers are the most powerful and complex in design; the parts of its engine are lubricated by an oil pump. The engine runs on pure gasoline. For two-stroke units - simpler ones - it is necessary to prepare a fuel mixture consisting of gasoline and oil. It is due to the amount of oil that is in the fuel that the rubbing parts in the cylinder of this engine are lubricated.
  • To prepare the mixture, you need gasoline of a certain grade AI-95 or AI-92. The brand of gasoline depends on its ignition speed - octane number. The lower this indicator, the faster gasoline burns and the greater its consumption.

Many models of lawn mowers have two-stroke engines that run primarily on AI-92 gasoline. The fuel for them must be mixed independently. It is better to pour gasoline into the lawn mower of the brand specified for it by the manufacturer, otherwise the trimmer will fail faster. For example, with AI-95 gasoline, the engine will quickly overheat, and if you choose AI-80, the fuel mixture will be of very poor quality, so the engine will operate unstable and with low power.

In addition to choosing the brand of gasoline, when preparing a fuel mixture for a brush cutter, you need to use a special oil designed specifically for two-stroke engines. Semi-synthetic and synthetic oils are well suited for lawn mowers. Semi-synthetic oils are in the middle price range, suitable for such equipment from any manufacturer , and lubricate the necessary engine elements well. Synthetic oils are more expensive, but using them will make the engine run longer. In any case, when purchasing equipment, you should carefully read the instructions, since sometimes the manufacturer gives recommendations on the use of specific brands of oil.

If you purchase Russian-made oil, then it should be marked -2T. For the long service life of your equipment and its good condition, you should never use oils of unknown origin.

Change of oil

There are quite a few manufacturers of trimmers, and the engine (gasoline) can be different (some are two-stroke, some are 4-stroke).

What gasoline is clearly indicated in the instructions for the trimmer, even if you have lost the instructions, you can always find them on the Internet (on the manufacturer’s website, for example).

They fill in both 95 (AI-95) and 92 gasoline, if the manufacturer writes about it.

The 80th is extremely rare, and the savings here are zero.

If the engine is two-stroke, then oil is needed for two-stroke engines, again, exactly what kind, read the instructions for the tool.

The most common option is the proportion 1:50.

If the engine is already worn out, or the trimmer is working under heavy load, then the proportion can be changed, for example 1:25, or even 1:20.

If the engine is 4-stroke, then gasoline is not mixed with small amounts; the gas tank contains “clean” gasoline without oil.

Be sure to find the instructions for the trimmer; there are no general proportions, no universal oil, and the octane number of gasoline may be different; the manufacturer of a particular tool clearly describes everything.

It is impossible to say about all trimmers at once with one answer, since each has its own specification!

But if we summarize the data, in most cases they recommend AI-92, but some models only AI-95. In my memory, higher octane gasoline marked AI-98 has not been used anywhere, so it is not worth filling it in, since the engine may not withstand it.

Now about diluting gasoline with oil - firstly, the oil must meet the API requirement for two-stroke engines with the designation class TA.

But what quantity, or rather the proportion of oil/gasoline, needs to be looked at!

But there is a nuance, these proportions can be written in three places:

  • manual
  • fuel tank
  • oil canister

I recommend starting from a can of oil, i.e. from the oil manufacturer's recommendation.

The responding authors correctly noted that there is a big difference in the brand of gasoline used for two-stroke and four-stroke engines. I do not take into account electric trimmers - by definition, they use lubricating components only for moving parts of the drive.

Without going “behind the stove,” I can say from my own experience that for two-stroke engines, gasoline should have an actane number lower than for four-stroke engines. I had experience using a Makita four-stroke trimmer using 92 gasoline. The owner of the trimmer used it again on the 92nd, although the manufacturer recommended gasoline of 95 and above.

However, I used all other operating fluids in strict accordance with the instructions (oil for the engine crankcase (for the crank)). I tried mowing with it at one time, and this is what I understood. The result is that the thrust is not to hell, much lower than that declared by the manufacturer, as a result there are more revolutions and heating too, gasoline does not burn completely, carbon deposits in the muffler are constantly growing.

For two strokes. It's just the opposite here. In whatever proportions you dilute 95 gasoline with oil, the additives present in it (and in Russia, by definition, there is no “pure” 95 gasoline at all - this is the same 92 additive package), it will not be possible to neutralize it with oil and therefore the detonating component cannot be excluded. In addition, a two-stroke engine, which works out each piston stroke cycle to ignite the working mixture, heats up much more on high-octane gasoline, since its combustion temperature is higher.

Which leads to an increase in the natural expansion of metals, well, it is quite logical to reduce the gap in the mating parts (piston group, races and balls of bearings, etc.) The four-stroke engine “works out” every second stroke in operating mode (ignition of the working mixture) According to the principle of operation of the system cooling, we can also say that 92nd gasoline is more recommended for two-stroke engines with an air cooling system.

The oil proportions for any type of engine should first be looked at in the product data sheet. Well, of course, it is clear to understand that in four-stroke engines oil is poured only into the engine crankcase, and for a two-stroke engine a working mixture is prepared from parts gasoline and part oil. You need to look at the proportions for oil and gasoline for each trimmer model (first of all!

) in the product passport. I can only give the guaranteed proportions of oil and gasoline for two-stroke engines of trimmers from Stihl and Huter - both during the break-in period and during operation, when using our (Russian) gasoline, dilute 25 milligrams of oil for each liter of 92-grade gasoline. A 4-stroke engine requires semi-synthetic or mineral oil marked SAE-30, SAE 20w-50 (summer), 10W-30 (autumn and spring). These markers indicate the viscosity of the oil. The product with a viscosity of 5W-30 is all-season and all-weather. A two-stroke engine is not critical to viscosity - the oil is already diluted in gasoline.

The oil in the lawn mower is changed once a year, provided that the equipment tidies up the lawn only in the summer. The best time is before the start of the season. It is necessary to change the oil if it turns black in the middle of summer. It is also recommended to change the lubricant after running-in the equipment, that is, after 3-5 hours of work from the moment of the first start-up.

Step-by-step instruction:

  1. Before changing the old oil, start the mower for 10 minutes. Warm oil drains easier and is also removed along with impurities and debris.
  2. Then wait until the equipment cools down. This takes 5 minutes.
  3. It is important to disconnect the spark plug and drain the gasoline.
  4. Next, using a pump or syringe, the lubricant is pumped out. Some models have a plug through which the remaining liquid escapes. It is located at the bottom of the body. The used product must be completely removed.
  5. If the owner sees oil in the air filter of the lawn mower, then when replacing the lubricant, the filter is also cleaned.
  6. Fresh oil is poured through the neck using a funnel into the crankcase. The fluid level is checked with a dipstick. Typically, 0.5 liters of material is enough to fill the oil container.

It’s not difficult to figure out how to refuel a lawn mower and what kind of oil and fuel to buy. In general, replacing the lubricant takes about half an hour. It takes even less time to prepare the fuel mixture and refuel the equipment.

Fuel mixture proportions

If the mixture is diluted correctly, for example, in compliance with the instructions below, then the equipment will serve you for many years without serious technical breakdowns. In this case, fuel consumption will be low and the work result will be high. The process of preparing fuel should always be the same and constant. It is better to always use the same ingredients, without changing the brand specified by the manufacturer.

You shouldn’t add a lot of oil, as this can damage the engine’s performance, but you shouldn’t skimp on it either. To maintain the correct proportions, always use the same measuring container so as not to make mistakes with the quantity. To measure the oil, you can use medical syringes, but some manufacturers also provide measuring containers with marks along with the oil.

The most correct ratio of oil and gasoline is considered to be 1 to 50, where 50 is the amount of gasoline and the amount of oil is 1. For a better understanding, let us explain that 1 liter is equal to 1000 ml. This means that to get a proportion of 1 to 50, we divide 1000 ml by 50, we get 20 ml. As a result, only 20 milliliters of oil need to be added to 1 liter of gasoline. To dilute 5 liters of gasoline you will need 100 ml of oil.

In addition to maintaining the correct proportions, it is also necessary to observe the technology for mixing the ingredients. Under no circumstances should you simply add oil to the gas tank. It is better to follow the following step-by-step instructions.

  • To dilute the mixture, you need to prepare in advance a container in which you will mix gasoline and oil. This can be a clean metal or plastic canister with a volume of 3, 5 or 10 liters to make it easier to calculate the amount of oil. Do not use drinking water bottles for this purpose - they are made of thin plastic that can be dissolved by gasoline. To measure oil, use a special measuring container. But if there is no such thing, then, as already noted, medical syringes with a large dosage are suitable.
  • Pour gasoline into the canister, without adding a couple of centimeters to the full volume. To avoid spilling gasoline, take a watering can or insert a funnel into the neck of the canister. Then take the required amount of oil into a syringe or measuring device and pour it into a container with gasoline. It is not recommended to do the opposite - pour gasoline into oil.
  • Close the cap tightly with the bottle and stir the resulting mixture. If some of the fuel spills out while preparing the mixture or stirring it, you must immediately wipe the canister with a dry cloth.
  • Be sure to follow fire safety precautions. Dilute the mixture away from fire and under no circumstances leave residual fuel and used materials within the reach of children.

Features of refueling brush cutters

When the mixture is prepared and ready for use, it must be carefully poured into the fuel tank. Since gasoline is a toxic liquid, safety precautions must be observed when working with it. Work must be carried out in calm weather and away from strangers. And also to pour fuel into the tank you need to use a watering can or funnel with which you previously diluted the mixture. Otherwise, the mixture may spill, go unnoticed, and ignite when the engine heats up.

The fuel bank itself must be cleaned of external contaminants and only then unscrew its cap to fill with prepared fuel. Once the fuel has been filled, the tank should not be left open, as insects or soil may get into it, causing the fuel filter to become clogged. You need to fill the tank with fuel to the specified mark or less, and then top it up during operation.

As noted above, you should not prepare the mixture more than is necessary for work; it is better to prepare less and, if necessary, repeat the process of mixing gasoline with oil again. If there is still unused fuel left, it must be used within 2 weeks.

During storage, the container must be tightly closed with a lid. Fuel should be stored in a cool room, in a place where the sun's rays do not penetrate. It is worth remembering that when storing the mixture for a long time, the oil dilutes and loses its properties.

Whatever brand your equipment is, it requires careful handling and high-quality fuel. If you follow all the recommendations and use fuel sparingly, your lawn mower will serve you for more than one season, and the land will always be in perfect order, without weeds and dense thickets of grass.

How Much Oil to Put in Gasoline for a Lawn Mower

The internal combustion engines used in lawn mowers are 2-stroke and 4-stroke. Users need to know that oil for lawn mowers with a 4-stroke engine is filled separately from gasoline. For a two-stroke engine, a fuel mixture is prepared with the addition of oil. With all this, various compositions are recommended that cannot be replaced or combined.

The energy transmitted by the motor shaft to the rotating mechanisms is released through the use of adiabatic expansion of gases at the moment of explosion in the combustion chamber. Due to the movement of the piston in the combustion chamber, gases are compressed. This means that the system works with the smallest gaps, and abrasion occurs on the mating parts. The gap between the parts increases, and the compression decreases, and the appropriate pressure for igniting the fuel-air mixture is not achieved.

This will happen if the lapped parts worked without lubrication. Motor oil for lawn mowers, added to gasoline or falling onto components from the crankcase, is applied as a thin film between the parts, preventing wear and tear. Because it is impossible to completely remove wear, oil washes away nanoparticles in the gaps, preventing them from destroying the surface.

The prepared fuel mixture should be consumed during the Crescent period, stored in an iron or polypropylene container. Do not store the composition with gasoline in plastic bottles. Decomposition products will enter the mixture, and carbon deposits in the combustion chamber will increase.

HOW TO PROPERLY DILUTE GASOLINE WITH OIL 1:50

You can’t add oil on the basis that the more expensive it is, the better. The introduction of ingredients depends on the class of equipment, the degree of grinding of the associated units, and the operating criterion. The composition of the flammable consistency for two-stroke engines depends on the method of obtaining the base of the antifriction composition. Oil for lawn mowers with a 3.5 stroke engine has a special composition. Our client is left with oils divided according to the method of production:

  • mineral;
  • synthetic;
  • semi-synthetic.

To protect the environment, the 4-stroke motor is safer. The power of such a motor is much higher than a 2-stroke one.

A two-stroke gas mower in some cases replaces an electric one. If you have a plot of tens of acres, buy a lawn mower with a 4-stroke engine.

But such an investment will quickly pay for itself with monthly use. A lawn mower with a 4-stroke engine will cut (and shred if the unit has a shredder) more grass for the same amount of gas.

It is not recommended to operate both types of engines using the same fuel composition. And although the gasoline engine type speaks for itself, engine oil is diluted with gasoline. It protects valves and injectors from accelerated wear. But the correct operation of the engine is not only determined by the need for oil. Also check which type of oil is suitable for the engine of a particular lawn mower - synthetic, semi-synthetic or mineral.
