Makita electric saw chain does not supply oil

Chainsaw chain lubrication system

To supply oil to lubricate the chainsaw chain, the tool uses a special pump, which delivers lubricant to the saw bar in a dosed manner, depending on the number of engine revolutions.

The system uses oil to lubricate the chainsaw chain, which has increased adhesive properties; this is necessary for uniform distribution of oil along the entire perimeter of the bar and retention on it even at high rotation speeds of the chain. Let's take a closer look at the oil supply system implemented in modern chainsaws.

Recommendations from electric chain saw manufacturers

What types of lubricants are recommended for use by the Russian automotive industry? Branded chain tools of the Stihl, Ryobi, Makita , Husqvarna brands; their Russian manufacturers recommend lubricating them with special chain oils. The same position is shared by specialists from Oregon, the leading manufacturer of accessories and gadgets for chain saws. It is clear that special chain oils include lubricants from the brands Stihl, Ryobi, and everywhere else.

Approximately intuition and common sense than to imagine that the best oil for a saw of grade N is a lubricant of grade N. This is how real ones are found. Apart from the textbook, there is a very significant point, the name of which is price. Our client is left with the lubricants recommended by the manufacturers, which have undoubted advantages:

  • high adhesive ability;
  • biodegradability;
  • the presence of additives that counteract wear and scuffing.

The main competitor to all of the above advantages is only the one mentioned above. Branded oil for electric saws costs 300–700 rubles per liter. This is still far from all that is important. Biodegradable oils tend to polymerize naturally. This means that the lubricant must be drained from the tank after finishing work with the equipment. The oil supply system should be flushed to remove any remaining lubricant. Otherwise, there remains the risk of clogging the accounting system for supplying polymerization products.

Lubrication system design

Depending on the brand of chainsaw, the parts of the lubrication system may vary slightly in design, but their total number and connection diagram remain the same.

The main components of the lubrication system are:

  • an oil tank located, as a rule, in the engine crankcase.

  • The filter element is installed in the tank.
  • The oil line is a small diameter hose made of oil-resistant rubber.

  • The heart of the system is the oil pump.

  • The worm gear transmits force from the engine to the pump.

  • The chainsaw tire can also be considered an element of the lubrication system, since it has special holes for supplying oil. By the way, the chain itself is involved in transporting oil and, accordingly, also has some elements designed specifically to provide lubrication.

Practical recommendations

It’s hard to believe that a user who has allowed himself to purchase a power saw, for example, from Stihl or Makita, will use grinding or other exotic options, widely presented on thematic resources, to lubricate the chain. Just like pouring sunflower or corn oil into an oil tank, boil graphite lubricant with diesel fuel.

Less knowledgeable users should not rely solely on the definition of “oil” when choosing a lubricant for a saw chain. Although there are those who like to present industrial, transformer and other brands of oils with specific properties as universal lubricants.

Practical experience in operating chain saws with an electric drive shows that oils of the M8 and M10 brands, tested for decades, have quite decent lubricating, consumable and, ultimately, economic indicators. To lubricate the chain of an electric saw, you can use all brands of oils that, according to their inherent characteristics, are designed specifically for lubricating rubbing surfaces.

With experience comes an understanding of what viscosity of oil to use for work in the cold season or summer; cut soft and wet wood or dry and hard wood.

Principle of operation

The main unit of the system is the pump. The principle of its operation is as follows. As engine speed increases, a gear mounted on the main shaft drives the pump shaft through a worm gear. In turn, the rotation of the shaft creates a certain pressure in the oil line, which forces the oil to move along it towards the tire.

The end of the oil channel is located at the point of contact of the tire with the tool housing, where there is a longitudinal groove into which, when installing the tire, its oil channel falls.

The groove is necessary to ensure the supply of oil to the bar, regardless of the degree of tension of the chainsaw chain. Simply put, no matter what position the tire is in at the time of operation, oil will get onto it through the groove.

Next, the lubrication process includes a chain, on the links of which, depending on the chain model, there is either a groove or a hole through which the oil is dispersed throughout the tire. As engine speed increases, the oil flow rate also increases.

Some models of chainsaws are equipped with pumps that additionally have capacity adjustment, and if necessary, the amount of oil supplied by the lubrication system can be increased or decreased.

This function is quite convenient, because it allows you to save money and not waste extra oil.

Guide bar for saws 35, 40 cm. Characteristics and features

The saw bar is also called a “guide”, since it directs the movement of the chain, which moves along it in the appropriate direction. In addition, it protects the latter from abrasion and wear. There are three main points on how to choose the perfect tire for a chain saw:

  • Chain pitch and groove width. When choosing tires, the properties and possible chain are important. You need to match the guide on the tackle. This is not difficult to do if you take into account the technical capabilities and comparability, which is located in the information for each assortment model.
  • Tire length. One of the favorite features at the moment are guides of 40 cm and 35. We will definitely talk about them, because for different household and professional needs different guide lengths are expected.
  • Shank type. This is the part of the guide where it is required to be fixed directly to the electric saw. The elements of the entry are made to match, since otherwise the part simply will not be fixed.

Let's look at the most popular tire samples with a length of 35 and 40 cm. The first one is also designated by the number 14'', and the next one is 16''. Remember that fitting and using the bar disproportionately to the saw is simply prohibited. A power saw of any model is designed for a certain type of chain, and accordingly the length of the bar. There is a golden rule that talks about the proportional power of the unit and the dimensions of the guide. In other words, the larger your electric model, the longer the tire you need (as specified in the technical instructions). What is still useful, they will draw conclusions:

  • The 35 cm/14'' tire makes it possible to cut a tree with a diameter of 25-30 cm, or a wider ideal, but in two passes or from 2 sides with 2 units;
  • The 40 cm/16'' guide will cut wood if its thickness is up to 40 cm.

Lubrication system malfunctions and how to fix them

The main malfunctions of the oil supply system on a chainsaw can be divided into two main types: these are general malfunctions inherent in all chainsaws and individual ones, which may vary depending on the type of pump and worm gear installed on a particular model. Let's begin to understand the faults in order.

Operating a chainsaw without lubricating the chainsaw chain is prohibited. This has a detrimental effect on the bar, drive sprocket and chain, and can result in significant repair costs.

Signs of a malfunction of the lubrication system, checking its performance

  • The chainsaw chain is dry and has a pale tint without shine.
  • The chain stretches relatively quickly.
  • The tire is very hot and may even partially melt the paint.
  • The oil from the tank is practically not reduced.
  • Reduced cutting efficiency on a sharp chain

All these signs indicate that the lubrication process is not proceeding properly. In order to check the oil supply to the lubrication system, you need to remove the side tire of the chainsaw and start it. Next, you need to slightly increase the speed while observing the end of the oil line. If oil comes in, most likely the amount is not enough for normal lubrication and you need to clean or replace the filter and, if possible, adjust the flow. If it does not, the problem is more serious and requires further diagnosis.

There is a way to check the oil supply without removing the tires. To do this, you need to point the end of the bar towards, for example, a freshly cut piece of wood from the side of the cut and increase the speed as much as possible, while trying to keep the end of the bar at a distance of no more than 10 cm from the block. If oil spots begin to appear on its surface, it means the oil is being supplied.

Troubleshooting

Once it has been determined that oil is not being supplied, further diagnosis is only possible if the oil system is completely removed. Of course, in some situations replacing the filter helps, but this is very rare.

Access to the oil pump of some models of saws is possible only after complete disassembly; therefore, without having the skills to repair gas-powered tools, it is better to entrust repairs to professionals.

Most common faults

  1. Broken oil hose. It can sometimes be detected by visual inspection. The problem is solved by replacing the faulty part.
  2. There is no thread on the oil pump shaft; replacing it will help.

  3. A defective thread on the pump drive gear can be similarly solved by installing a new part.
  4. Lack of main shaft corkscrew (relevant for some instrument models, for example, Homelite). You can fix it by installing a nail of a suitable diameter instead of the original corkscrew, cutting it to the required length.
  5. Blockage in the line. Can be removed by blowing with compressed air or mechanically, using a wire of a suitable diameter.
  6. Filter element clogged.
  7. The Stihl MS 180 tool, whose pump is not dismountable, often gets clogged. You can try to wash it in clean gasoline, if that doesn’t help, replace it.
  8. In Chinese chainsaws (Gypsy), it very often cuts off the grooves on the main gear, through which the force from the sprocket is transmitted to it.

Individual malfunction of the Stihl MS 180 lubrication system

Due to the fact that the Stihl MS 180 is one of the most common models of chainsaws, I would like to dwell in more detail on one fault inherent only to it and describe a method for eliminating it without replacing parts.

Quite often, on the Shtil MS 180 chainsaw, depressurization of the oil line is observed in the place where the oil line coming from the tank is installed in the saw body. The malfunction can be determined by the characteristic lubricant leaks on the bottom of the tool.

To eliminate the problem, you need to remove the chainsaw handle, remove the hose from the mounting hole, clean and degrease. After all these manipulations, apply sealant to the hose seat and install it into the chainsaw body.

You can learn more about troubleshooting and complete diagnostics of the lubrication system of the Stihl chainsaw by watching a video that shows the step-by-step process of disassembling and repairing the lubrication system.

TOP 5 oils for electric saw chain

At the moment, the market is overflowing with lubricants, which, according to their manufacturers, are capable of ensuring the uninterrupted operation of the cutting set and its drive mechanism. But not every composition shows truly superior performance and efficiency. We are talking about cheap liquids with a minimum of suitable additives, as well as non-original oils that come to the market under the name of well-known brands, in other words, fakes.

In order not to make a mistake when choosing oils, it is better to give preference to the following chain compounds:

  • 1. Forest Plus from Stihl. The main advantages of this composition include good adhesion, as well as high performance at temperatures up to 15⁰C. By following the advice indicated by the German manufacturer, the service life of the composition will reach 3 years;
  • 2.7. Bio Plus from Stihl. To produce these lubricants, a natural plant base is used. Using this fact, the oil decomposes in the soil without causing harm to the soil. Lubricant from a German manufacturer is used at temperatures up to 15⁰C;
  • 3. Synth Plus from Stihl. This oil successfully withstands high loads and operation at temperatures down to -25⁰C. To produce the composition, a balanced synthetic base is used;
  • 4. Husqvarna Vegoil. The introduction of this material from a well-known Swedish manufacturer saves up to 40% of oil without reducing the protection of the drive and cutting parts of the electric saw. The oil prevents the formation of resinous deposits and rust on tool parts;
  • 5. Champion BAR CHAIN OIL. An affordable chain oil designed for heavy use in summer and winter. The liquid has high adhesion and decent anti-corrosion properties.

The constant use of any of these oils guarantees trouble-free operation of the chain and bar of the electric saw, regardless of the loads affecting the cutting set.

Possible reasons for fuel failure

Oil to the chain only if there are two breakdowns. These include:

  • problems with air leaks;
  • failure of the oil pump .

Basic parameters of a chainsaw chain.

The main cause of failure is air leaks. This can happen due to depressurization of the oil hose while using the chainsaw. In this case, it is necessary to remove the hose from the hole. This must be done in the place where it is connected to the crankcase. Then the hose is seated on the sealant and installed in its usual position. If this doesn't help, there's likely been a loss of elasticity. For further operation of the chainsaw, it is advisable to replace the hose.

The second reason is a breakdown of the oil pump . In common parlance this part is called a worm. When the drive fails, oil will stop flowing to the chain . The oil pump drive is a round plastic ring with grooves inside. Constant use of a chainsaw leads to wear of the internal parts, resulting in the metal hook located inside the drive being chipped. After this breakdown, oil stops flowing to the chain .

Popular brands

As mentioned above, modern saw oils are produced by a large number of brands. Among them there are both little-known and very popular. If you decide to purchase high-quality and reliable saw oil, then you should familiarize yourself with the list of the most popular models.

Forest plus

This oil is in enviable demand and has excellent adhesive properties. Forest plus is characterized by the fact that it can be used if the temperature outside the window is not lower than -15 degrees.

If you comply with all storage and operation conditions for this product, it can remain of high quality for 3 years.

BioPlus

The company's products, called Bio Plus, are made on a plant basis. When oils from this company penetrate into the soil, they very soon begin to decompose. Not every oil can boast such a difference. This product can be used at temperatures down to -15 degrees, just like the previous option.

Oil is not supplied to the chain, electric saw repair, oil pump replacement

Even the most reliable tool has its own degree of wear, and minor or minor repairs are required from time to time.

Chainsaw fuel system: 1 – fuel filter, 2 – carburetor, 3 – manual pre-priming pump.

If the carburetor is adjusted correctly, fuel will be consumed in the permissible amount. Otherwise, it will end too quickly.

A slow decrease in fuel while the saw is in use is normal. If it is missing, the chain is not lubricated correctly, so working with the chainsaw must be smooth. It is necessary not only to be able to fix breakdowns, but also to identify them yourself.

You can change the fuel supply manually. The correct operation of the lubrication system is determined by holding the tire up. If oil splashes appear, then everything is set up correctly.

Review of brands from various manufacturers

Today there are many tempting offers on the market from a variety of manufacturers of specialty oils that can operate in high temperature conditions and still provide excellent gear lubrication performance. The most popular of them are presented in the following list.

  1. Forest Plus has high adhesive characteristics and can be used at ambient temperatures down to - 15°C. Subject to certain conditions, the shelf life of the oil is 3 years. Sold in 1-liter and five-liter packaging. Cost 1 l. – 330 rubles, 5 l. – 1140 rubles.

  2. Bio Plus products are made on a plant basis. When released into the soil, it quickly decomposes. The oil can be used at temperatures down to - 15°C. Packaging – 1 and 5 liter containers. Cost 1 l. — 360 rubles.

  3. Synth Plus is made on a synthetic base. Withstands increased loads and can be used at particularly low temperatures down to – 25°C. Packaging – 1 and 4 liter containers. Cost 1 l. – 790 rubles, 4l. – 2970 rubles.

  4. CHAMPION adhesive oil is designed to operate over a wide temperature range. Sold in 3 and 10 liter containers, which is very convenient for use in forestry. Cost 3l. – 490 rubles, 10 l. – 2200 rubles.

  5. The HUSQVARNA Vegoil product is one of the most economical solutions for the lubrication mechanism of an electric saw. According to the manufacturer, the consumption of this material is 40% less than others. Cost 1 l. – 390 rubles.

Using special oil to lubricate the chain mechanism of the electric saw will ensure its uninterrupted operation for a long time. This will allow work to be carried out quickly, efficiently and with a high level of safety, which will ultimately lead to significant savings on repairs and maintenance of the entire tool.

Oil for an electric saw is perhaps the most important and necessary consumable. It is this that has a positive effect on the operation of the instrument. Good oil significantly simplifies the process of operating this device. With it, the cutting blade has better contact with materials that have different structures. In addition, thanks to this consumable, the tool can last much longer.

Let's figure out how to choose the right oil for an electric saw.

Troubleshooting Circuit Problems

During operation of the chainsaw, it is necessary to constantly monitor the lubrication of the chain. After all, it is this part that works in the most difficult conditions. The chain is constantly overheated and dust and abrasive particles become clogged with it. All this negatively affects its service life. A special lubricant will correct the situation. is supplied to the chain from the tank, thereby ensuring unhindered operation.

If lubrication does not occur during operation, there is a high risk of overheating. When oil flow, the chain begins to stretch. At the same time, there is still a possibility of it jamming or spontaneously jumping off, as a result of which a person can receive serious injury.

The channels through which fuel is supplied can become clogged with small particles, so it is advisable to clean them periodically. It is also important to monitor the oil level in the tank. Debris in the channel is a common cause of chain brake failure. This may have a negative impact on your work.

Regular cleaning of the channels and general maintenance of the chainsaw will allow the tool to function for a long time.

But what to do if all the recommendations are followed, but the oil still leaks. It is necessary to ensure that the chainsaw is operating correctly. It is likely that it was assembled incorrectly. If the breakdown has not been identified, it is recommended to take it to a workshop. In some cases, it is necessary to replace the pump, but this should be done if the saw is new. Old tools leak due to worn out reservoir.

Only a specialist can assess the current condition of the chainsaw. If you lack knowledge or lack confidence in your own abilities, it is advisable to entrust instrument repair to a professional.

Basic malfunctions of electric saws

  • When I press the start button on the unit, the saw does not start. Perhaps the network cable or electrical plug of the device has failed. If the cable remains in order for our client, then the reason for the failure of the unit may be a faulty start button, burnout of the motor windings or complete wear of the brushes.
  • During operation, the brushes on the electric saw burn, and a circular fire appears on the motor commutator. The malfunction can be caused by worn brushes or a short circuit in the armature winding.
  • The chain is not receiving lubrication. This happens if the oil in the tank runs out, the tube (also called the hole responsible for supplying lubricant) is clogged, or the oil pump fails.
  • The unit does not have the right to develop full power. Possible prerequisites are as follows: the brushes are worn out; interturn short circuit, in other words, breakage of the armature winding; low voltage in the network; the start button is faulty; the gearbox is jammed; malfunction of the brake complex of accounting programs.
  • The electric saw engine stops during operation. This behavior of the unit may be more likely to be caused by jamming of the gearbox or wear of the brushes.
  • The electric motor of the device quickly overheats. There may be several events that indicate that the saw is heating up: high ambient temperature; poor engine ventilation during operation at low speeds; ventilation holes are blocked or clogged; long operation of the unit under heavy load; excessive tempo of machine operation without rest breaks; gearbox malfunction; lack of lubrication; damage to the motor windings.
  • The unit makes an uneven cut. The prerequisite for this is dull chain cutters, or uneven tire wear.
  • While the motor is running, the chain remains motionless. Almost always, breakdown occurs due to clutch failure. This malfunction also appears when the gears of the gearbox and drive sprocket break.
