Breather on a lawn mower, what is it and where is it located?

Troubleshooting Methods

Most often, if fuel leaks from the filter, owners rush to change the carburetor. The mistakes of this approach to repair are:

  • gasoline may enter the air filter not only due to the fault of the carburetor, so replacing it with a new one may not eliminate the problem;
  • ridding the float chamber of debris is not a labor-intensive process and is carried out without resorting to financial costs;
  • revising the settings of the quality and quantity screws can eliminate the malfunction without dismantling the carburetor.

Therefore, to correct the problem, it is recommended to adhere to the following action plan:

  1. If there has been interference with the idle speed or mixture settings, check that they are set correctly;
  2. Check the operation of the vacuum valve. When closed, fuel should not pass through;
  3. Check the electronic starter enrichment. After turning it off, you need to test run the engine;
  4. Remove the carburetor and disassemble it;
  5. If no significant wear, deformation, or damage is visible, blow it out. If plaque or fallen resins are visually detected, the float chamber will need to be flushed;
  6. Some fuel system designs include a reed valve. It has low maintainability, especially when made of metal. If any bent is found, it is recommended to replace it with a new one.

It is necessary to change the carburetor only if it begins to throw fuel due to excessive wear. In this case, the vehicle has a solid mileage on the odometer and gasoline begins to be thrown into the air filter not unexpectedly, but gradually with increasing volume. Initially, you can only notice the smell, but over time the amount of fuel in the filter can reach 100 - 150 grams.

If the trimmer does not start, check the serviceability of the filters

You will need to check the air filter, which cleans the air entering the carburetor. Clogging of the cleaning element leads to the fact that air enters in less quantity or completely stops supplying it to the carburetor. You can find out whether the air filter is the reason why the trimmer does not start in a simple way:

  1. Remove the air filter and inspect it. The presence of blockages is already a reason to blame this part for everything
  2. If clogging is not visually detected, then you need to try to start the engine without a filter. If the trimmer starts without a filter, then this part definitely needs to be replaced.
  3. The air filter can be cleaned with a stream of compressed air, but if it has not been changed for a long time, then it is advisable to replace it with a new one

It should be noted that the trimmer may not start due to a clogged air filter, but these are extremely rare cases. Often, a clogged air filter affects the stability of the engine and also contributes to a decrease in performance.

This is interesting!
If the chainsaw starts up without an air filter, then working with the tool without a filter element is contraindicated, since contaminants will get into the cylinder, thereby reducing the service life.
The real reason why a gasoline trimmer won't start is that the fuel filter is clogged. This part is located in the tool tank, and if the scythe is more than 2 years old, then it’s time to check the serviceability of the fuel filter element. If the filter is clogged, then the fuel mixture will not flow into the carburetor, which means the trimmer will not start.

There are no difficulties with replacing the fuel filter, since to do this it is enough to remove this part from the tank and replace it. If you are going to clean the fuel filter with a compressor, then it is recommended to abandon this idea. It is better to buy a new filter for cleaning the fuel of a lawn mower, since there will still be blockages inside the old element. The video below shows the process of replacing the fuel filter on an Oleo-Mac brand lawn mower.

https://youtube.com/watch?v=wqV1fWziaL8%3F

If you are not sure that the reason why the trimmer motor cannot start is the fuel cleaning element, then you should do the following:

  1. Remove the fuel filter
  2. Start the lawn mower
  3. If it starts, and quickly, then the problem is really in the fuel filter.

The filter becomes clogged due to the following reasons:

  • During prolonged use of the tool
  • If low-quality gasoline or oil is used
  • When storing fuel in the tool tank for a long time
  • If you fill the tank with fuel that has been stored for a long time
  • If dust and small particles get into the tool tank. This usually happens while refilling the tool.

This is interesting!
If the fuel filter is working properly, but the lawn mower does not start, then you should make sure that the fuel hose is placed in the fuel. After all, there are cases when the hose together with the filter is simply disconnected from the main tube, which makes it impossible to start the engine of the tool.

Chain brake does not work

Malfunctions of the fuel system are also quite often the main reason that prevents a chainsaw from working as efficiently as possible. First of all, you need to check the quality of the fuel mixture.

If gasoline drops periodically appear on the body of the chainsaw, then it is necessary to check the tightness of the fuel tank. Over time, it may dry out. Or the gasket has become “stiff” and it can no longer perform its direct function.

If full-fledged gasoline streams appear, then there is a high probability that you will have to change the burst hose connecting the carburetor and the fuel tank.

There are several reasons why the fuel mixture stopped flowing into the cylinder:

  • The air filter is clogged.
  • The carburetor settings have been lost.
  • The carburetor membrane is no longer intact.
  • The channels through which gasoline is transported are clogged.

In this case, you should start looking for a problem with the filter elements. For the most part, it is precisely because of the reduced capacity of the air and gasoline filters that the idle speed begins to “float”.

If everything is in order with the filters, then you need to check the components of the gas supply system, and also make sure that there are no spontaneous changes in the carburetor settings.

In some cases, chainsaw users report other problems that do not significantly affect the operation of the tool.

Most often, excessive smoke appears when oil is added excessively to the fuel mixture, which does not have time to burn completely. You should also check to see if the carburetor settings have gone wrong.

In most cases, recoil at the moment of startup signals the decompressor clamping. If the tool is not equipped with a decompressor, then most likely the ignition system is faulty.

  • No or low oil supply
  • Oil leakage

In the first case, we first inspect the channels through which oil is supplied to the tire and clean them. Their clogging is a fairly common occurrence.

If there is significant oil leakage (small oil leakage is normal for all gasoline saws), you should check the tightness of the tubes and fittings of the oil pump. Tubes may fall off and even crack. Violation of the tightness of the tubes is eliminated by replacing them or sealing them with sealing material.

As for oil pumps, they may have different designs for different models of chainsaws, and the drive is also carried out differently (as a rule, the drive is carried out by a drive sprocket or a special gear on the crankshaft). If there is a problem with the oil pump, then most often you will not have to completely replace this entire unit; it will be enough to replace its moving part (plunger), which most often fails due to the ingress of large amounts of dirt and sawdust.

The most serious damage is a crack in the oil pump housing. In this case, you will have to completely replace it.

We suggest you read why the ovary of cucumbers turns yellow in a greenhouse and what to do, causes and treatment

The chain brake may fail if the underframe space and brake band are contaminated with grease and sawdust. In addition, the chain brake may not operate due to wear on the brake band. If it is contaminated with sawdust, you should clean the saw from debris, and if the tape is worn, replace the tape with a new one.

Petrol mower repair: overview of faults and effective methods for solving them. Photo instructions from the pros!

Modern technologies and equipment make it possible to produce the best and optimal technical solutions, which become effective assistants in arranging a summer cottage or personal plot. A green lawn and other plantings can grow quickly; to tidy up the local area and mow lawns, a gas mower is used, which is also called a brush cutter, trimmer, or gas mower.

Traditional scythes are inconvenient and unsafe to use; they require a significant investment of time and effort, which will help save money with gas-powered scythes that combine functionality and practicality in their design. In the photo of lawn mowers you can see various high-tech devices, which are characterized by a set of performance characteristics, including such parameters as increased productivity and long service life.

A convenient and reliable trimmer is a technical device consisting of individual mechanisms, parts and elements that can wear out, become unusable and be damaged during intensive use.

Even with regular technical inspection, maintenance procedures and careful storage, such devices and their individual parts require repair and even replacement; all repair procedures can be carried out independently.

How to clean the filter on a trimmer

Sooner or later, there will definitely be a need to wash the air filter of a Husqvarna trimmer or any other manufacturer. There is nothing complicated, and you can remove dirt from it yourself a couple of hours before mowing.

How to replace the air filter in a trimmer

To do this, we proceed as follows:

  1. We unscrew the bolt on the protective casing or press the latches.
  2. We take out the filter and inspect it. You will need gasoline to remove all accumulated oil and other contaminants.
  3. Pour gasoline from a canister onto the dirty filter and wash off all the oil. Squeeze and leave to dry for at least 2 hours.
  4. Wipe the installation area with a cloth soaked in gasoline.
  5. We install everything in place and close it with the casing.

VIDEO INSTRUCTIONS” alt=””>

Instead of gasoline, you can use soapy water, but it still does not remove dirt as effectively.

As an alternative to washing, we can recommend blowing or simply shaking out the debris. These cleaning options are suitable if there is no oil contamination.

Replacing the trimmer fuel filter

If the trimmer starts to stall at high speeds, most likely the fuel filter is so dirty that it requires urgent replacement.

It is quite possible for anyone to replace it. You can follow the following algorithm.

Step 1

The first thing you need to do is remove the intake tube (watch the video), since the filter itself is located inside the fuel tank. To do this, we pull the pipeline toward ourselves with our hands. When removing the seal, the intake tube should come off and remain in the tank - tweezers will help you remove it from there. You can also drain the gasoline from the tank and pull the intake tube out through the hole.

Step 2

We take a new filter, put an intake tube and a spring ring on it.

Step 3

We install the sealing ring back on the pipeline, attach the intake tube with a new filter to it and fill it into the tank along with the tube.

Step 4

Reinstall the O-ring. We turn it a little around its axis so that the connection is fixed.

Step 5

Bleed the carburetor using a booster pump.

How to clean the check valve and restore the functionality of the tool

First, let's figure out how to find out that the breather is faulty and needs to be cleaned or replaced. There are three ways to do this.

  • The first method
    involves inspecting the condition of the hole on the gas tank cap. If the hole is clogged with dirt, then the valve definitely needs cleaning.
  • The second method
    is if the lawn mower does not start or the engine stalls after a short period of use. These are indirect signs that the carburetor cannot pump fuel into the system due to the pressure created inside the tank.
  • The third way
    is to disconnect the fuel hose from the carburetor and then take a look. If fuel flows out in a strong stream, then the equalizer is working properly and does not need repair. If the fuel does not flow out or flows in a weak stream, this indicates a malfunction of the equalizing valve. Fuel does not leak due to the pressure created inside.

It’s quite easy to make sure that the problem is hidden in the breather - to do this, try unscrewing the cap. If this is difficult to do, and when you turn the hatch you hear the sound of air bleed, then you should definitely clean the breather.

You can clean the check valve in the following ways:

  • Use a needle and compressor. The needle is needed to remove dirt from the hole in the tank lid. You need to blow compressed air from the compressor through the hole from the back side so that any remaining dirt flies out of the hole. This method is simple, but it is not always suitable
  • Disassemble the breather and inspect it, followed by cleaning or replacing the device. The breather repair kit is not sold, so if the filter element or the valve itself is damaged (usually it is presented in the form of a rubber seal), you will need to buy a new gas cap for your model of tool

Below are instructions on how to disassemble the breather and clean it yourself:

  1. The first thing you need to do is make sure that the breather is located in the tank cap. Next, consider the case when the check valve is located in the lid structure
  2. Remove the lock from the cover, which serves to prevent the hatch from being lost when refilling the tool.
  3. We proceed to remove the pressure equalizer from the inside of the cover. To do this, you need to pry up the device and remove it along with the rubber seal.
  4. The parts removed from the cover are a rubber gasket and a breather with filter
  5. Next, you need to remove the filter from the rubber valve and clean and purge
  6. If the rubber valve shows no signs of damage, then it is enough to blow and clean it together with the filter, and then reassemble the device

At this point, the repair procedure is completed, and all that remains is to check the functionality of the lawn mower’s breather in action.

To summarize, it should be noted that this small detail is often the reason that it is impossible to start the chainsaw. Even completely cleaning the carburetor will not help eliminate this problem. Often, inexperienced mowers turn to service centers to repair tools, not realizing that the reason is hidden in this small part, which plays a very important role in the operation of the engine of a gasoline tool.

Breather Cleaning Procedure

A common cleaning method is to use a sewing needle. Before cleaning the valve, make sure that it is clogged. It's easy to do.

  • We remove the carburetor (it needs to be disconnected from the fuel hose), evaluate the number of traces of fuel.
  • If the fuel leaks out and the breather remains unstained, then what can our client do with the child and we need to continue the diagnosis. If a weak stream of fuel flows from the gas line, you can rest assured that the breather needs thorough cleaning.

What is a breather?

This is a part that is the same as a standard valve. It plays an important role - it restores pressure in the chainsaw tank. Why is it important to return the pressure? To be able to answer this question, you need to consider the process of vacuum formation in the tank. This happens when fuel is supplied when the gas tank is hermetically sealed (in this case, the pressure on the walls increases). The breather smoothes the pressure (relative to atmospheric pressure). Without this small valve, the importance of which some people underestimate, proper operation of the chainsaw is impossible.

Purpose

What is an engine breather? Before answering this question, it is important to understand what it is intended for. This is directly related to the principle of its operation

The main task of this device is to reduce the pressure in the engine crankcase. When the power unit operates, various gases collect in the crankcase. Gradually they accumulate and create quite a lot of pressure. If you do not bleed them, the engine may stop, the pressure will back up the pistons. In this case, the gas will seek an exit through any available hole. To prevent this from happening, a breather is installed.

This device is also used to ventilate the crankcase. Unnecessary gases are removed from it. Thus, the temperature inside the engine is slightly reduced. The engine breather has two tasks: ventilation and releasing excess pressure. In some cases, the operation of the breather can indicate the presence of problems in the engine. If the rings are stuck or the piston is damaged, gray smoke characteristic of the exhaust will fly out of the hose. This way you can diagnose these faults without disassembling the engine. In normal condition, a slightly noticeable transparent smoke comes out of the breather.

Chainsaw chain lubrication system

Scheme for checking the operation of a complex of accounting programs for chain lubrication.

Lubrication of the chain and bar in gas-powered tools is done automatically. The oil will be poured into a suitable container, and then, through a special design, will enter a pumping device that is installed in an unfamiliar operating chain. From the pump structure, oil will flow into the tire gap and, after completion, flow to the chain itself.

Oil pumping devices are driven by a gear drive, which is driven by a drive sprocket. When the engine is idling, no oil will be supplied to the system. The performance of the pump structure depends on the number of revolutions of the working star. The higher the speed, the more oil will flow to the chain. Some designs are equipped with a manual performance adjustment system.

Chainsaw

is a complex mechanism, so before starting work it is recommended to study its design in detail.

Breather repair and maintenance

Due to its low cost, as well as ease of removal/installation, breather repair almost always comes down to replacing it. But even forgetful car owners who carry out its maintenance from time to time will not need this, since there is simply nothing to break.

All its maintenance comes down to timely cleaning. It is enough to wipe the outside with a rag, and if the stains are old, you will have to use a knife, screwdriver or scraper.

Cleaning the inside is a little more difficult, but still very simple. The breather must be removed (it can be bolted or firmly seated “in tension”) and cleaned with a primitive cleaning rod, which can be made from a piece of wire. We do the same with the oil trap mesh: in rare cases, when it is very clogged, mechanical cleaning will not be enough. And then you need to burn it by pouring just a little gasoline, or soak it in aggressive chemicals for several hours.

Assembly, as is quite predictable, is in reverse order. Therefore, the entire process will not take much time and will not require special tools or skills.

However, this is best done during a seasonal oil change or when undergoing regular maintenance. On most cars with average mileage, it is enough to carry out this simple operation twice a year. But it is the engine breather that confirms the immutable truth: there are no small details in a car, especially a modern one.

For a car engine to function, a number of conditions must be met, including normal pressure in the crankcase. And this is ensured by the crankcase gas exhaust system, one of the main elements of which is the breather.

If everything is in order with the electrical equipment, then we check the carburetor.

Vacuum carburetors are installed on trimmers. When disassembling, cleaning or washing it, you need to be extremely careful - under no circumstances disassemble the lower part of the carburetor, where the primer is located. The air filter (it is visible if you remove the protective casing from the carburetor) must be washed with detergents. Best for washing dishes. After drying, put it back. We wash the carburetor with clean gasoline and blow through all the holes with a pump. We also wash the fuel line filter, then dry and assemble everything. Usually, after all the manipulations, the trimmer starts working.

A thin cable instead of a fishing line, is it worth installing it on a brush cutter?

This thought comes to the mind of almost everyone who has had to mow 10 acres overgrown with tall grass. At first glance, the idea seems good. The cable is stronger than the fishing line and does not wear out as much. However, not all so simple.

Repair it yourself or send it to a service center

Most of the malfunctions of gasoline chain saws can be fixed with your own hands. True, this requires an understanding of the structure of the chainsaw and how the components function among themselves. As for the tools, the most often needed are:

  • screwdrivers (slotted and power);
  • combination wrench included in the kit or regular wrenches with heads of various sizes.

It is worth understanding that not every problem can be solved on your own. Not every chainsaw owner has a compression gauge at home or a special device that allows you to create a vacuum and the required pressure, for example, to check the crankcase for leaks. In this case, you simply cannot avoid contacting specialized specialists.

Quite often, such a malfunction as leaking gasoline is observed in a Chinese chainsaw with a volume of 38 cubic meters.

How to get to the breather?

You don't need any special skill. The easiest way is to refer to the instruction manual for your model. However, instructions for dismantling the handle can also come to the rescue.

First, pay attention to the preparatory stage

  1. To make cleaning easier after dismantling the saw handle, remove the bar and chain, and the side cover. This is not necessary, but it is advisable, because at the same time you can use a brush and a compressor to remove traces of oil, dirt, and sawdust.
  2. Set the dismantled parts aside.

After cleaning, we proceed to removing the handle.

  1. The handle is attached to the body by three shock absorbers (all rubberized), but they cannot be removed immediately, so first we work with plastic plugs. They are usually located in the internal cavity of each shock absorber.
  2. Take a strong screwdriver and start squeezing out the shock absorbers. Start with the one that is located close to the handle at the back.
  3. We remove two screws that will allow us to dismantle the wire rod (it is connected to the carburetor and the gas trigger, located close to the handle where you removed the first shock absorber).
  4. At the end you are left with a handle that is connected to the shock absorber. Now all that remains is to unscrew the housing (twist the inside of the handle to the side).
  5. Remove the casing from the rubber band. All is ready!

If you have previously disassembled a chainsaw, you can quickly handle dismantling the handle.

Typically this step is followed by disassembling the starter. But, given the standard structural features of a chainsaw, we don’t need this step in order to get to the breather. If desired, you can also remove the starter, since a lot of sawdust accumulates under it.

Where it is located?

The breather on the Husqvarna chainsaw, as in models from different manufacturers, is located in the tank. Sometimes it becomes clogged, which leads to problems with starting the tool or the chainsaw runs intermittently or does not start.

How to fix the problem? Here are several options:

  • use a compressor for cleaning;
  • Clean the small breather hole with a needle.

In both cases you have to get to this detail. Taking into account the structural features of chainsaws, in order to clean the breather, you will have to remove the handle of the device.

The structure of a lawn mower and common malfunctions

The easiest way is to have your lawn mower repaired by allocating a certain amount of money from the family budget; prompt and high-quality repairs with your own hands are no less simple and convenient if you want to understand the design of the lawn mower and fix all the problems.

Mass and piece production of trimmers is based on the use of generally accepted technology; a typical design diagram consists of certain elements and parts, it is important to know them when carrying out independent repair work:

  • top part. The basis of the entire structure, where all the important elements are assembled, such as the starter, carburetor and lawnmower engine;
  • middle part. A hollow rod, inside it there is a cable connecting the motor and the gearbox, which drives the cutting line. This part contains fastenings for distributing the weight of the entire structure and a belt for fixing the trimmer on the belt of the person using the trimmer for its intended purpose;
  • Bottom part. It houses the gearbox and cutting elements, which are hidden under a practical cover that protects the user. The casing provides an increased level of safety, preventing large fractions of debris, stones and glass from entering a person while working with a lawn mower.

The most common and common unit breakdowns that can be self-corrected include the following problems:

  • engine malfunction, due to which the lawn mower does not start and does not work;
  • increased vibration of the mower bar, which complicates its intended use;
  • increased overheating of the gearbox, its accelerated heating during operation;
  • slow and weak functioning of the cutting line at insufficient speed;
  • clogging of the starter grill, causing the engine to overheat and fail to operate;
  • rapid and frequent carburetor clogging due to the use of low-quality fuel;
  • clogging of the air filter due to failure to take care of the device.

All these problems can lead to the device losing its functionality; before ordering the necessary spare parts for the mowing machine, a visual inspection and diagnostics of the device should be carried out.

Individual spare parts and assemblies of the device require special attention; to check them, you do not have to contact a professional technician; a set of diagnostic measures will help you to identify the consequences of loss of performance with your own hands.

Air purification system

Pre-filters have different designs and do not consist of several elements, for example, from a mesh (2.4) not a snow (1) filter (see photo below).

The latter prevents snow from entering the air purification system; it is not used only in winter; at above-zero temperatures it is removed.

Some models of chainsaws use air purification using centrifugal forces during pre-cleaning. Malfunctions of the Shtil MS 180 chainsaw and where the breather

in a chainsaw calm ms 180. The air flow is twisted by the flywheel impeller, and as a result, impurities are thrown away from the suction pipe going to the fine filter.

Fine filters are made of diffusion foam rubber, nylon mesh and other materials.

During operation of a chainsaw, the air in the area of its operation can be heavily contaminated with sawdust and wood dust. Excessive filter contamination reduces the volume of air entering the carburetor, which leads to an enriched mixture without a decrease in the power of the chainsaw. Therefore, regular filter cleaning is necessary. How to oil should be carried out not so much when the chainsaw is disassembled for repair, but much more often, after any long, non-dirty work. Cleaning is carried out using a method depending on the type of filter material. most often by blowing not by washing.

Is the spark plug wet? Is it completely covered in petrol-oil mixture? Your gasoline trimmer, the repair of which we are trying to describe, has problems with carburetor adjustments. This often happens when non-specialists tried to configure it. If you do not have experience, we strongly advise you to contact a service center, since with your actions you may well burn the entire piston system.

However, not everything is so bad: if you violate the cold start rules, constantly trying to pump up the fuel mixture, this can easily lead to a stall.

It's a different matter when the candle is covered with a thick layer of black soot. In this case, the gasoline trimmer, the repair of which we are describing, was exposed to a poor-quality fuel mixture. Maybe the problem is again due to improper adjustment of the carburetor, which produces a fuel mixture that is too rich. Just replace the spark plug.

Fuel supply

Often the lack of gasoline entering the combustion chamber is explained by the fact that a lot of dirt has accumulated in the gas tank, which simply clogged the supply hose. as shown in Clean the breather How to repair the starter on a trimmer. Disconnect the fuel hose. If fuel does not flow from it, then a clogged fuel filter or breather is to blame. The latter can be cleaned with a needle, and the former should preferably be completely changed every three months.

Among other things, repairing Patriot gasoline trimmers often requires replacing the air filter. Being clogged, it prevents the formation of a normally enriched fuel mixture.

And one more thing: a muffler clogged with carbon deposits is often to blame. It needs to be dismantled, washed in kerosene or burned on a burner. This is especially often done by those for whom repairing Husqvarna gasoline trimmers is a daily job.

Starter

The starter mechanism consists of a drum (1) with a cable (2) and a handle (3) and a frame (4) with a return spring. When the handle is raised sharply, the drum ratchet engages the teeth on the engine shaft and turns the crankshaft. When the handle is released, the return spring returns it to its original position.

It takes a certain amount of force to tighten the crankshaft to the speed at which the engine starts. Starting the chainsaw with one jerk often fails, you have to jerk it several times. Various methods are used to make startup easier. enrich the fuel mixture with a carburetor valve or reduce the pressure in the cylinder using a decompression valve (to make cranking easier).

The starter quite often fails. In this case, repairing the Partner 350 chainsaw with your own hands should begin with the following: unscrew the side cover, which is located next to the gearbox. The starter of the presented saw is located near the motor. In order to inspect this part, the air damper is first removed.

Next you will need to disconnect the carburetor. The starter in this model is connected to the throttle. To separate them, you need to use a screwdriver. If carbon deposits appear on the starter, this part will have to be completely replaced. In this case, an ordinary modification is installed, and finding it in the store will not be difficult.

Purpose

The task of the breather in a car design is to connect the engine sub-piston space with the atmosphere. Additionally, the breather is installed in the valve cover of the block head.

During operation of the power plant, the movement of components, mechanisms, and lubricant leads to an increase in pressure inside the crankcase and under the cover. In addition, crankcase gases accumulate in the sub-piston space, which also increases the pressure.

Piston rings are not able to ensure complete tightness of the combustion chamber, so some of the working gases break through and enter the sub-piston space.

The operation of the motor is accompanied by temperature changes, which causes condensation to form inside. The accumulation of moisture inside the motor is unacceptable, since it is the main cause of corrosion.

A mixture of working gases that have broken into the crankcase, moisture, and oil particles that are mixed in contact with the lubricant are called crankcase gases. An increase in pressure inside the crankcase is usually accompanied by a deterioration in engine performance, since gases create additional resistance to components and mechanisms.

Malfunction of unspecified category

In some cases, owners of chainsaws have to solve more complex problems to fully restore the functionality of their cutting tool.

The chainsaw does not develop full power

In addition to the problem discussed above with a lack of gasoline or air entering the cylinder, the cause of low power may be a clogged muffler.

If you do not periodically clean the muffler clogged with combustion products, then the problem of poor engine power may not be the only one.

Carburetor depressurization and nozzle blockage

Over time, the screws holding the carburetor cover in place can become loose or the gaskets can become unusable. A clogged filter or improper replacement can lead to clogged injectors. All this also negatively affects the operation of the chainsaw and shortens its service life.

To prevent this, it is enough to periodically inspect the saw and, if necessary, evenly tighten the screws.

Chainsaw won't idle

It often happens that after long-term transportation and constant use, a chainsaw refuses to idle smoothly. As a rule, this problem is eliminated by adjusting the carburetor.

You can learn how to properly debug the carburetor from this video:

If the carburetor is tuned like a clock, then you need to check:

  1. Fuel system. It makes more sense to start with the fuel pump.
  2. Muffler. There is a high probability that due to the abundance of accumulated soot, the engine cannot function normally.

Chainsaw loses power under load

If during operation the power of the saw disappears somewhere, then the problem should be looked for in the following places:

  1. In the muffler. It, as you already understood, tends to get clogged.
  2. In a clogged fuel filter.
  3. A poorly functioning fuel pump.

Carburetor repair

When inspecting the carburetor, you should pay attention to the possible leakage of the fuel used; to identify carburetor problems, the following measures must be taken:

  • purging the fuel hose to eliminate possible clogging of the element;
  • checking and replacing the gasket located between the engine and carburetor;
  • determination of tightness and maintaining constant pressure in the unit.

If necessary, you can disassemble and thoroughly clean the unit yourself, using gasoline; cleaning the nozzle and channels is carried out using compressed air.

Preventing Breakage

The sudden appearance of gasoline in the filter after visiting a gas station indicates dirty fuel. You should stop visiting unverified stations. It is also not recommended to buy fuel while replenishing the storage tank, as the flow from the fuel truck pipe lifts all the debris from the bottom of the tank.

When performing adjustment work, you should mark the positions of the mixture quality and quantity screws. To do this, you need to tighten the bolt completely, counting the revolutions. In case of subsequent unsuccessful setup, knowing the preset value, it will be much easier to return to the original state.

Whatever the reason for the appearance of gasoline in the filter, you should not delay troubleshooting. Operating the engine in such conditions leads to excessive wear of all parts, which increases the need for major repairs. A quick response to the first symptoms of malfunction of the fuel system will save the owner’s wallet from unnecessary waste.

Clutch

At low speeds, elements with friction linings (1), having a degree of freedom in the radial direction, are attracted to the center of the shaft by springs (4.5) and do not transmit rotation to the drum (3), connected to the sprocket driving the chain. When the chainsaw engine speed reaches values where the centrifugal force exceeds the force of the springs, the friction segments are pressed against the inner surface of the drum and do not begin to rotate it. As a result, the drive sprocket begins to rotate, driving the saw chain.

As you can see in the photo, the star is located

behind the clutch.

On other chainsaws, the sprocket may be located on the outside of the clutch.

The main advantage of clutches of this type is that when the chain jams, the chainsaw clutch slips without stopping the engine and without causing breakdown of the mechanisms that transmit movement from the engine to the chain.

How to properly store a lawn mower and eliminate problems with starting it

Its launch depends on the correct approach to storing the trimmer. Moreover, this applies not only to long-term winter storage. How to properly store a gasoline trimmer, in order to protect yourself from problems with difficulty starting it, you need to take into account a number of the following recommendations:

  • Before putting the tool away for winter storage, you should drain the fuel from the tank. In addition, remaining fuel also needs to be removed, and this can be done by starting the engine, letting it run for a while until it stalls
  • It is advisable to store the instrument in a dry place
  • Before starting the engine after a long pause of more than 2-3 months, it is necessary to first inspect the spark plug electrodes, as well as check the main components - the air filter, high-voltage wire, etc.
  • When using the tool, you need to take into account that overheating of the motor negatively affects the service life, so you need to take breaks while working, especially if a trimmer with a two-stroke engine is used for work. Units with four-stroke engines are not only more powerful, but also more durable
  • After winter, the first thing you need to do is pour a little oil into the spark plug hole, first moving the piston to its dead center. This is necessary in order to lubricate the CPG parts when starting the engine, thereby preventing their rapid wear.

Only with the right approach to finding the reasons why the trimmer does not start can you find and fix the problem yourself. Moreover, for this you do not need to be a specialist or thoroughly understand the design of gasoline units. Proceed in order in the sequence presented in the material, and restoring the functionality of the lawn mower will be as easy as shelling pears.

Engine

In most cases, the following problems occur in engine operation:

  • the engine stopped starting;
  • the engine starts, but after a while it stalls;
  • the engine is not able to develop the required power;
  • The engine is extremely unstable.

How to check crankshaft seals

The presence of oil seal leaks can only be checked by getting to the crankshaft itself and carefully examining it for leaks. You can see how to do this correctly in the video:

How to check compression on a chainsaw

At a compression level below 8 atmospheres, the engine will not have enough power, which means the chainsaw will not be able to fully function.

To measure compression you need:

  1. Remove the protective cover and unscrew the spark plug.
  2. Insert the tip of the compression gauge into the hole where the spark plug should be located.
  3. Using the starting cord, rotate the piston and remember the maximum readings of the measuring device.

How to properly install a piston on a chainsaw

The work of replacing the piston for most models of modern chainsaws is carried out according to the following algorithm:

  1. The top and side covers are removed.
  2. The candle is unscrewed.
  3. The stoppers are removed from the shock absorbers and the handle is disconnected from the body.
  4. The drive sprocket and starter are removed.
  5. A piston stopper is installed in the spark plug hole and the nut securing the flywheel and clutch is unscrewed.
  6. The flywheel, clutch, and worm drive of the oil pump, located immediately behind the clutch mechanism, are removed.
  7. The screws securing the carburetor and air filter are unscrewed, after which these components are removed along with the engine control lever.
  8. The ignition coil is removed, as well as the muffler.
  9. The saw is turned upside down and, by unscrewing the screws securing it to the body, the engine is disconnected.
  10. The pan is unscrewed and the piston is removed.
  11. Since the piston is removed only together with the crankshaft, to disconnect it it is necessary to remove the retaining rings.
  12. The old piston is replaced with a new one, but as carefully as possible. This is caused by the high fragility of compression rings.
  13. The crankcase is put in place, and sealant is used instead of a gasket.
