  4. Types of adhesive tape and its characteristics

Scotch tape is an adhesive tape that is used as packaging material. The exact purpose is determined by the material and thickness of the base, the characteristics of the adhesive layer, and the width of the tape. The group produces adhesive tape:

  • packaging and stationery with a polymer base;
  • technical types of adhesive tape;
  • bilateral;
  • krepp.

Scotch tape with a polymer base

Can be used as a consumable in the office or for packaging goods (sealing boxes and bags, gluing cardboard, paper, etc.).

Stationery tape is transparent, with a thin polymer base (up to 40 microns), with a sheet of small width. Can be used at home. The adhesion of the glue is average; it is not designed for heavy loads or use at high humidity or low temperatures.

Packing tape is stronger and sticks more securely. The thickness of the polymer base can be:

  • 40-43 microns. Used for temporary packaging, for packaging light cargo, gluing packages with accompanying documentation, etc. A thin adhesive tape is usually coated with a thin adhesive layer with medium adhesion;
  • 45 microns. Stronger adhesive tape, higher adhesion reliability. Suitable for sealing boxes and containers weighing up to 10 kg, can be used for packaging frozen and chilled products, withstands temperature changes well;
  • 47-50 microns. Average thickness of the polymer base and adhesive layer. Suitable for cargo weighing up to 25 kg, can be used for transportation or storage in difficult conditions (with moving cargo, at low temperatures, in the open air, etc.);
  • 50-54 microns and more. Durable adhesive tape for heavy or bulky loads. Suitable for gluing fragile surfaces, maintains good adhesion at high humidity and temperatures below zero.

The purpose of the adhesive tape is determined by the width of the web:

  • 12-18 mm - used as stationery tape or for sealing small, light boxes and packages;
  • 24-36 mm - suitable for sealing small light containers, provides more reliable gluing;
  • 50 mm - universal adhesive tape for cardboard, polymer, paper packages with medium weight;
  • 75 mm and more - for large containers, heavy loads (weight more than 20 kg). Can be used to reinforce worn packaging.

Adhesive tape with a polymer base can be transparent or colored. The transparent adhesive tape is invisible on the packaging, the adhesive seam looks neat. Colored tape is used as a means of marking or part of the packaging design. A logo or special information (“Fragile cargo”, “Do not open”, etc.) can be applied to the polymer base of the adhesive tape. Adhesive tape can be used as a seal - some types of tape, when peeled off, leave a colored adhesive layer on the surface of the container so that the integrity of the package cannot be restored. This shows that it has been opened.

Types of adhesive tape and where they are used

There is an adhesive layer on both sides of the tape base. The composition of the glue can be rubber or acrylic. The purpose of the adhesive tape also depends on the base itself. It can be paper, fabric, aluminum, polypropylene, etc.

All adhesive tapes are divided into the following groups according to their intended purpose:

  • construction;
  • painting;
  • stationery;
  • decorative;
  • packaging;
  • economic.

A range of adhesive tapes that are used in construction, repair and household work:

  1. Aluminum tape contains foil and acrylic-based glue. Purpose: sealing seams, minor and major repairs of metal products, as a shielding element from heat or cold.
  2. Among technical types, reinforced tape is particularly durable. It is resistant to stretching, frost resistance, and difficult to dismantle. The base is PVC, reinforced with fabric fibers and a water-repellent polyethylene layer.
  3. Double-sided masking tape is a tape with a paper backing that is designed to quickly absorb liquids. This way, individual areas are painted neatly and evenly. The crepe comes off easily from surfaces without leaving any marks.
  4. Special tape for vapor and waterproofing of premises. They are used to fasten protective films, ensuring the tightness of the seam.
  5. Bitumen tape is a special material for roofing. A composition reinforced with rubber and polymers, high adhesion to most materials, flexibility and strength are the reasons why this tape is called construction tape.
  6. The polypropylene type has a high moisture-repellent ability, it is very durable, firmly glues both flat and curved surfaces. Suitable for glass items. Completely transparent.
  7. The base of the adhesive tape made of foamed polypropylene is designated as VSPP. The width of such tape is from 0.5 mm. This is a guarantee of increased strength: the structure of the adhesive tape fills the smallest pores on the surface; many materials, including mirrors, are glued in this way.
  8. In underfloor heating systems, fabric-based tape is often used, but they are mainly used for attaching carpet or linoleum. The cotton or synthetic base is very flexible, and the acrylic adhesive layer ensures strong adhesion and quick installation work.

What tapes can be found in an office or printing house?:

  1. Ordinary stationery. It comes in both transparent and colored: white, black, with a pattern or relief. Decorative and glossy tape are used for decoration, for example, for scrapbooking.
  2. Packaging tamper evident tape, or sealing tape. Its characteristics: durable, wide, transparent or colored, with inscriptions or logos. The purpose of the sealing tape is to protect parcels from being opened. The number indicator tape cannot be discreetly removed and re-attached.
  3. Silk-paper tape is used for gluing paper, including photographs.
  4. Matte is used for writing inscriptions. It is usually easily removed from surfaces, including paper, and re-glued to a new location.

Various types of special purpose:

  1. Magnetic is an interesting variation of regular tape with a layer for holding metal objects. The range of uses is very wide: from attaching information holders to making souvenirs.
  2. Mirror is a universal adhesive tape on a foam base, used for attaching mirrors and working with glass, including in the furniture industry.
  3. Special tape for testing paint adhesion. Used as a test tool.
  4. Heat-resistant Teflon tape is used for work at elevated temperatures. Very flexible, durable, thermally conductive. Used in the range from –90 to +280 degrees.

Advice To increase the adhesion of double-sided tape, use an activator - a primer in the form of a napkin . They are used to treat grease-free areas for placing adhesive tape. After the primer has dried, attach the tape.

Technical and special adhesive tapes

Used for strong bonding of packaging materials or for technical needs.

Aluminum adhesive tape. Used for communications and equipment installation. The base is made of aluminum and is not subject to corrosion. The adhesive layer is acrylic, with high adhesion. Retains stickiness at temperatures from -20 to +100°C. The width of the tape is 5-10 cm.

Metallized tape. The base is polypropylene with metal coating on the surface, the adhesive layer is acrylic. Used to create strong, hermetically sealed connections in construction, repairs, and equipment installation.

TPL. Adhesive tape with a reinforced PVC base coated with polyethylene. Moisture-proof, creates an airtight connection. The PVC layer is reinforced with cotton fabric for greater durability. Used as packaging material for large, heavy cargo. Can be used to create sealed connections, seams when installing pipes, and equipment elements.

Glass reinforced tape. The base is reinforced with fiberglass, which increases the strength several times.
The material has high strength and flexibility. The adhesive layer is rubber, with a high level of adhesion and resistance to high temperatures. This tape can be used for packing heavy loads, when installing equipment, building and other structures.

Reinforced adhesive tape

TPL reinforced tape is available in two versions: single-sided and double-sided. It is indispensable when carrying out repair work. Adhesive tape made of cotton fabric laminated with polyethylene is convenient for sealing pipelines, repairing greenhouses, greenhouses, and insulating electrical wiring.

The reinforced material is very durable and can withstand high tensile loads. The fibers are arranged lengthwise, so it is impossible to tear the tape crosswise with physical force.

If you need to securely pack a box with a heavy item, this is the best option. Low elongation is another important property. It means that the tape has almost no stretch. Materials that can be fastened:

  • tree;
  • leather;
  • cardboard;
  • paper;
  • polymers;
  • glass;
  • metal;
  • polyethylene.

The tape can withstand temperatures up to 60 0C. The adhesive base contains synthetic rubber, which can melt under strong heat. The base color can be blue, red, black or silver. A type of reinforced material is aluminum, including reinforced with fiberglass. It is more durable than cotton backing and is completely resistant to moisture.

Choosing the right products is important for both companies and individuals. The former minimize material costs and ensure continuity of the production process, while the latter have the ability to quickly and effectively solve problems associated with minor repairs and home improvement.

Double-sided tape

This is a tape that has adhesive on both sides. It comes in rolls and is protected from sticking with wax paper. Double-sided tape without a base is a ready-to-use adhesive layer on a paper backing. Used for gluing paper, cardboard, polymer materials. Double-sided tape with a base is two layers of adhesive applied on both sides to a woven, polypropylene, or paper tape. The base strengthens it and makes the seam resulting from gluing more durable.

Which is better for printing?

For such an area, it is customary to buy special adhesive tapes; there are not many of them; there are three popular versions:

  • Standard office tape. Transparent or colored - depends on the preferences of the company or person. Relief designs are also available for sale. If a person is engaged in decorating, it is worth paying attention to glossy ribbons;
  • The indicator option is suitable for transporting special cargo, which should not be opened by anyone until received by the customer. The technical characteristics of such an instance are sufficient width, tensile strength, and the presence of special inscriptions or logos. The model is actively used in postal transportation or when moving important papers between companies. The adhesive tape is made individually; there is no way to peel it off unnoticed;
  • Also, the standard matte version is suitable for gluing paper; it can be easily and effortlessly removed from the surface and glued again to another product.

Krepp

Krepp (painting tape) - adhesive tape for temporary gluing to a surface. The base is most often paper, but quite durable. It is waterproof and you can write on it. The adhesive layer has moderate adhesion, it sticks well to any substrate, holds quite securely, but is easily removed and does not leave marks.

Masking tape is used when performing finishing work - when painting, priming, and decorative surface treatment. The tape covers areas that should not be exposed to paint, primer, impregnation, etc. It can also be used as packaging material - for temporary sealing of light containers.

Features and Variety

Scotch tape always helps a person out, so it is useful in any apartment or house. In addition, some people, using only duct tape and ingenuity, create various inventions. Therefore, the scope of application is very wide and has gone far beyond the scope of construction.

Double-sided tape is in particular demand, as it provides reliable adhesion of various objects on both sides. However, it is important to choose the right one so that it can be easily detached when not needed.

If you look at the variety of this device, the range is very extensive; a person will be able to find various products that can perform almost all tasks.

Clear tape

A popular economic model that is actively used to repair various equipment. Width varies from 15 to 72 mm. The smallest versions are used for office purposes, but the large tape is ideal for connecting various packages. The optimal thickness is 40 microns. Of course, there are also less thick models in stores, but their strength is not so high.

It is also important to understand that a person will not be able to carefully pack a box, even a small one, with stationery tape, because the adhesion of this product is several times lower. Packaging options are distinguished not only by long winding, but by a reliable adhesive composition, which ensures reliability for a long time.

Colored tape

This option is practically in no way inferior to the previous one in terms of adhesive ability, the only difference is the appearance. Today, models are sold that are painted brown, blue, green, and red. Most often, such products are used for packaging or labeling. For example, in one color the manufacturer indicates that fragile material is being transported, and in another color the product requires special storage conditions.

Also, this option is indispensable for zoning production areas or establishing the optimal distance between visitors. Also at the factory, thanks to a colored tape, the correct direction of transport is indicated. Therefore, this option is in active demand in various fields, even food.

Masking tape

In another way, this option is called crepe; it is thin paper, on the surface of which an adhesive composition of medium adhesion is applied. The main purpose is to prevent paint from getting onto the protected layer.

In addition, the product has good resistance to moisture, so it can be used in construction work. Removing the tape does not take much time, and there is no sticky residue left on the surface, which is an additional advantage.

Some users use masking tape for household use or for packaging various products. In households, it was used to insulate wooden windows, which protected an apartment or house from drafts in the winter.

Features of double-sided tape

A distinctive advantage of this option is the presence of two adhesive bases. In this case, sticking between them does not occur; special paper prevents this, but a polymer strip is also used instead. The base depends on the manufacturer, but is most often used:

  • Paper;
  • Foamed polyethylene;
  • Fabric is a less popular option;
  • Polypropylene.

Double-sided adhesive tape can be used both for decoration and in the professional field. Even shoemakers use this option when repairing or making shoes. It is also used as a full-fledged glue substitute in printing or similar areas.

Household tape

The main feature of this option is the reinforced base, as well as the use of an adhesive composition with a high level of adhesion, all of which guarantees reliability. The product is reinforced with a special fabric mesh that provides instant tearing and increases tensile strength.

With the help of such a product, you can reliably glue different surfaces together in a few seconds, and given that the base is often made of PVC, this product is not afraid of any moisture. Such technical indicators make it possible to use the tape when packing various goods, as well as when fixing large plumbing equipment. The seams are strong, durable and airtight, which is appreciated by many workers.

Even if a sharp temperature change occurs, the product will withstand it with dignity and will not allow liquid to leak out and cause damage.

Using masking tape

Masking tape is a paper tape with a layer of special rubber-based adhesive applied to one side. To perform its functions, masking tape paper must have the following characteristics: light weight, rough surface, good absorbent properties. The adhesive base should “stick” well to the surface and at the same time leave a minimum of traces after its removal.

Masking tape is used in painting work:

  • When it is necessary to protect the surfaces of walls, ceilings, windows, wallpaper, doors from paint, plaster, mortar or primer, and polyurethane foam. It is used for attaching protective film during any repair work - in this case, the adhesive ability of the adhesive tape is of particular importance.
  • To create perfectly smooth paint areas and no paint on adjacent surfaces.
  • For marking the boundaries of painting when using several coating colors, for decorative finishing or applying a pattern. High strength and flexibility of the tape contribute to high-quality work.

Using masking tape in room decor

In addition, “traditional craftsmen” use masking tape in the following cases:

  • When you need to drill a hole on a smooth surface of tiles, glass, or tiles. Tape is glued to the hole marking and, thanks to the rough surface, the drill will slip less when drilling.
  • For the safe removal of small glass fragments.
  • To organize a workplace or temporary storage, when small parts can be quickly glued to tape so that they do not go anywhere and at the same time are within reach.
  • If you cover the edges of a can of paint and varnish products, the paint will not flow into the grooves.
  • Protection against light mechanical damage when transporting furniture, mirrors, etc. The tape is glued to the most vulnerable places - edges, corners. Helps protect the coating from “accidental” damage.
  • If you need a clean cut when working with wood. By wrapping the marking area with adhesive tape, you can get a cut without chipping.
  • An indispensable item for marking and packaging work. It differs from transparent tape in the ability to apply inscriptions and marks to the paper base. Widely used both in logistics and in everyday life.
  • Bonding paper, paper tape and film joint to joint. Suitable for connecting joints when gluing wallpaper.

Adhesive tape was invented by the Americans, and the name Scotch was established thanks to the legends of Scottish stinginess. In the first copies of the tape, glue was applied only along the edges, which buyers considered phenomenal greed and demanded that the tape be made more adhesive. Subsequently, the Scotch Tape trademark was registered by 3M Company. Products from 3M are considered benchmarks in this area.

Types of adhesive tapes (adhesive tape) and their scope of application

For many people, adhesive tape or adhesive tape is an exclusively transparent strip (narrow or wide), which they use mainly for working with paper. It is made on the basis of BOPP (biaxially oriented polypropylene film). But there are many more types of adhesive tapes: opaque, colored, mirror, foil and paper, PVC films and many others are also on sale. Depending on the specifics, they are divided into stationery, packaging, painting, reinforced, marking and logo tapes.

Packing tape

This type of tape is perhaps the most popular type of packaging material all over the world. Another invaluable advantage is its low cost and ease of use. Nowadays, duct tape is used almost everywhere. First of all, adhesive tape provides high-quality, fast, and

durable packaging of food and industrial products. Scotch tape has excellent technical characteristics, so it is used in industry and construction. Packing tape is even used as a decorative element and as a protective covering.

During transportation, adhesive tape will protect the goods from microdamage, and will also reduce the cost of packaging material and simplify the loading process.

Non-standard ways of using adhesive tape have also appeared in everyday life. For example, you can use adhesive tape to make a plug for an outlet. And some artists use tape as an auxiliary fastening material for decorative figures and paintings...

It is difficult to name any area that does not require the use of such a universal packaging material!

Stationery tape. Using stationery tape

The most common type of adhesive tape, it is useful almost everywhere - from production to offices and home interiors. Has excellent adhesion to most materials - plastic, paper, cardboard, film. Due to its colorlessness, it is practically invisible on the surface. It is made from biaxially oriented transparent polypropylene with an adhesive layer - a water-based acrylic emulsion.

Characteristics of stationery tape:

  • width – 15, 19, 25 mm;
  • winding – 10, 12, 25, 33 m.
