The modern tool is designed to remove the high workload from a person, and at the same time increase the specialist’s performance several times. In the case of a nail gun, this efficiency indicator is without a doubt one of the highest. Installation of profiles for plasterboard systems, soft roofing, furniture manufacturing and other types of work with this device are more intensive and require less energy.

The review involves different types of tools for driving nails, pins or special staples. The best models of pneumatic, electric or gas pistols are presented in their respective categories. The rating position of the models is based on the characteristics of the equipment, its operating parameters and the opinions of specialists who use nailing units in their work.

Nail gun. Tips for use

To avoid injuries and get high-quality results, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with some of the features of working with this tool:

  1. Wear safety glasses equipped with side shields whenever you operate a nail gun. They will protect your eyes if a nail or parts of nailed objects accidentally come off;
  2. Be sure to choose certified pistols that have passed quality tests. Defective power supply elements quickly overheat, and if used too intensively, can even catch fire;
  3. Powerful models are quite noisy during operation. That's why it's best to work with them using headphones;
  4. The tool should be stored in a dry and cool place, inaccessible to small children and strangers;
  5. The mechanism of a nail gun hammers nails so quickly that sparks can fly in the process. Therefore, it is advisable to remove all flammable objects and materials around the work site;
  6. Before starting the device, be sure to check the strength of fixation of all its parts, as well as the number of nails in the cassette;
  7. When loading nails/fasteners, do not press the start button;
  8. When performing installation operations, the tool must be positioned strictly in the direction of the surface to be fastened;
  9. You should carefully monitor the return of the spring mechanism to its original position. Otherwise, it may cause the tool to break.

Rating of nail guns

Manufacturers produce nail guns that operate on different principles. The VyborExperta.ru project team decided to analyze the features of the equipment, its reliability, performance, and efficiency. To be included in our rating, tools must have impeccable ergonomics and maintain their characteristics during intensive use. User reviews, opinions of furniture makers, professional builders, and market availability were taken into account.

Experts analyzed:

  • Drive - engineers suggest compressed air, electricity, gas or gunpowder as a power source;
  • Productivity – the number of hammered hardware within an hour;
  • Dimensions – you have to work not only on spacious sites, but also in conditions of limited free space;
  • Weight – the heavier the equipment, the lower the labor productivity;
  • Mobility – the presence of a wire or hose with compressed air complicates operation;
  • Power – the depth of driving depends on this indicator;
  • Functionality – the presence of impact force adjustment makes the equipment universal;
  • Charging features - the number of hardware in the clip, the difficulty of reloading affect performance;
  • The housing design is an important criterion for professional use.

Not all nail guns met the requirements. Sticking nails, insufficient impact force, power fluctuations, low performance – our team excluded tools with such characteristics from the rating.

How to choose a nail gun

Nailers are a popular tool in the West, but in our country, until recently, they were exotic. The active construction of frame houses, the use of wooden sheathing and moldings in finishing work has become the reason for the high demand for nail guns. Equipment for various purposes has appeared on the market en masse. How to choose the right model to ensure maximum productivity on the construction site? There are a number of important factors to consider.

Purpose

Manufacturers offer to buy roofing nail guns, nailers working with finishing nails, pneumatic staplers and assembly staplers. The main differences between equipment categories are in the characteristics of the fasteners used. When creating a construction system, long nails are used. To work with such hardware, a model with a large magazine and increased power is required. Parquet workers work with small nails that are driven in at an angle - this is taken into account by the design of specialized nailers.

When assembling furniture, small nails or staples are used. To fix the fastener, a lot of power is not required, but the rate of fire is important. When installing eurolining, simulating timber, and fastening plywood flooring, medium-length hardware is used. Finishers need a model that works with finishing nails.

Power supply

Work with hardware is carried out in stationary or mobile conditions. In a workshop for assembling furniture or producing containers, you can use equipment connected to an electrical network or a compressor. Electric and pneumatic nailers are distinguished by high power, productivity, and low cost per impact.

Mobility is important when working on a construction site. Wires and hoses interfere with movement and may be damaged. Battery and gas guns will provide the necessary mobility. When choosing a model, you need to take into account the battery capacity: the higher it is, the less often you will have to change the battery.

Weight, ergonomics, balancing

When choosing equipment, it is necessary to evaluate the following characteristics:

  • Weight – it is difficult to work with a heavy gun for several hours, but if high power equipment is required, then an increase in weight is inevitable;
  • Ergonomics – comfortable handles reduce the load on the hand and make work comfortable. Lining with anti-slip materials improves safety;
  • Balancing – Well-balanced guns will improve productivity. If the tool is noticeably overweight, then there will be a problem with misfires.

Our rating includes models with a good balance. It is convenient to work with such a tool in the most difficult conditions.

Nail length

There are no universal nailers; the tool is designed to work with nails in a certain range of sizes. The choice of equipment depends on the planned use:

  • 50-100 mm – used in the assembly of frame houses, construction of roofing systems, subfloors;
  • 30-50 mm – used for laying finished floors, installing parquet and molded products;
  • 10-30 mm - intended for assembling furniture, frames for apiaries, installation of vapor barrier and waterproofing materials.

The power of the nailers takes into account the length of the nails used, this allows the fasteners to be driven in completely without damaging the material used.

Additional options

Additional options allow you to make your work more comfortable:

  • Double security system – protects against accidental shooting;
  • Battery charging indicator – helps to replace the battery in a timely manner;
  • The indicator of the number of hardware in the magazine is a useful function when working with small nails and staples.

An important criterion is the number of fasteners in the store. In rack stores, the number of nails rarely reaches 100-120 pieces. For large volumes of work, you will need a drum nailer designed for 150-200 nails.

What parameters should you use to choose a nail gun?

Before choosing one or another nail gun model, it is necessary to clearly define the range of work performed. The required power of the tool, the type of drive and, accordingly, the cost will depend on this.

It is better to fasten moldings and baseboards with finishing nailers using thin hardware.

For laying floors and assembling frames, a frame nailer is more suitable. Such a tool can penetrate through the surface and provide reliable fastening of structural elements. Frame nailers can drive nails up to 220 mm long with a maximum diameter of 5 mm.

It is advisable to fasten sheet finishing materials, imitation timber and lining using drum guns. Such models drive nails whose length does not exceed 75 mm, and the diameter of the head is 7.5 mm.

For construction and installation work and working with metal structures, the best choice would be a gas or powder nailer with high shot energy.

You should also evaluate the degree of mobility, ergonomics and cost of the tool. Thus, buying an expensive professional model for household needs is simply impractical.

Electric nailers will help you deal with soft and insufficiently dense materials. Sheathing with fabric, foam rubber, cardboard or fiberboard is what electric guns can handle.

Gas nailers are characterized by mobility and high power. If you have a large construction site outside the city or far from the power grid, then one of the gas-powered guns will definitely come in handy. True, you should immediately prepare for large expenses, because this equipment is not cheap.
